Update: Just got my JDS Labs c421 in the mail today. It is absolutely incredible with the UM3X, and no hiss whatsoever. I'm using it with my iPod Video 5.5g, but I'm itching to try it with an iPod Classic and CLAS. Curse you Head-fi!!! very_evil_smiley.gif

@atty101,

For genuinely portable use, I consider 80-90% of the recommendations made in this thread to be overkill, although the OP did give us a reasonably large number to play with. Unless you can guarantee that you will be able to find a spot in a library (or wherever) with zero ambient noise - in my experience, that's a luxury - you will want maximum isolation and I very much doubt that you will want to carry the CLAS stack around, but that's an individual thing. Do you want to be removing and reinserting customs every time you are interrupted by a phone call or another person ? Having worked in open plan offices with a horde of code cutters around me, it quickly becomes apparent that isolation is more important than immaculate SQ - as always, YMMV. Based on your later posts,it would seem that you are now considering a desktop rig - there are no 'right' answers to a post like yours, but its generally accepted that your 2K will go further on the desktop.

I also have concerns re the durability of expensive IEMs when subjected to the rigors of portable use, but that's a topic for another thread.
