Saying it's nonsense is a somewhat bold statement. Even if it's subjective most would say that Beats don't have great performance at their cost. And yes it is somewhat diffucult to put it in numbers how much better something is. Overall I prefer HD-650 over the HD-598 but both are performing well. HD-598 even performs better in some instances so all in all it's not far off.

You also have to consider that headphones can reach better performance when connected to better amps and dacs. It's difficult to compare portable headphones to full size ones. HD-700/800 has a hard time reaching it's full potention out of an iPod Touch. In this case maybe even the PX100 would sound better.

Some would say that the price range 300-500 USD is where many hifi headphones are at. Above that is where things like distortion values, vibration dampening, quality material play a greater role. Usually there is a lot of research going on perfecting something that is already considered good and all of it has to pay off in the end hence the higher price tag (that is what I think).

needless to say, I only paid $430 for my HD 700's brand new from Best Buy (employee discount). It's because of the high margin / profit that has got me curious as to what it's really worth.

I like mine also, as do most people that try them (though they're modded with foam inside).  I paid the full $1000 and am okay with that.  Though seeing a Best Buy employee say

Makes me want to get a job there, get the headphones for $430 and quit the job!

You paid $430!!!  In my location, Best Buy just wanted to get rid of them, so I got mine free but it worth $1000 to me.

I didn't know about the modded HD700. Where can I find more info?

Free!?

I did it on my own accord.  Similar to the "Anax" mod for the HD 800.

I have no measurements.

700

Just kidding, animefreeks knows what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the picture. Very interesting, any improvement in the SQ?

I think what you meant was very simple... you just can't believe that animefreeks paid just $433 for their HD700 - which probably no one believed and would kill for that.

and SQ difference should probably tone down the Sibilance.

Also it doesn't mean if I got something very cheap or even free that thing is worthless.

Yeah in the graphed HD 800 purrin has there's a 2-3 db reduction from around 2k HZ or so on up.  So I like to believe that is happening here as well.  Seems much more tame than stock, but it's been a long while since I've heard the 700s without the foam.

I do like adventures, can we use any foam?

Uh, sure?  But will it be the same?  No idea.

I used Creatology sticky backed foam, as it was what was originally used in the HD 800 foam mod thread.
