They are not the only online store out of stock or showing "discontinued". Perhaps AKG stopped production and are selling off remaining inventory.
I just ordered one in Black before it's all gone.

I suppose it's possible, but it's a relatively new product, they've announced nothing new to replace it, and it's still being promoted on their website. Then again so are Denon's Dxxx which are discontinued.
On the other hand I can't find any reference to the new K550 on their websites, which is very popular and based on K/Q70x as well. So their own website seems to be a mess.
But in the absence of a new announcement the Q701 is still AKG's home products flagship and the star of the Quincy Jones line. It seems unlikely the'd be ditching it unless they have all new products coming out that nobody even has heard rumored. I suspect it's just out of stock. Crutchfield often lists products as "discontinued" when they discontinue carrying it, even though other stores may sell the same product for years.

Subbed to see how this ends.
As long as I can get parts for my Q, I'll be happy. And hopefully the K701 and K702 will be around for a long time. But I'd imagine it'd be pretty embarrassing for AKG to remove this product from its lineup, seeing as how it was outlived by the previous design upon which it was based.

Unlikely. They seem to be targeting their product lines by celebrity tie-in . Jones was first, replacing the high-end home audio lineup. No doubt Tiesto will be endorsing what was formerly known simply as the "DJ series".
There's no indication that both endorsements won't run parallel for the different, already previously segmented, product categories.
AKGs website is horribly out of date though. Not even a mention of the new K550? I know they plan on a new true flagship probably in the next year to replace K1000, but there's no reason at the moment to think the already fairly new Q701 is going anywhere. They already bothered moving the production to China I believe to spare the cost on the Austrian production (no idea if K702 is going that route or not as well.)

K701 was replaced by Q701. They still exist in the market but officially I believe it was discontinued long ago with the new branding. K702 is still in production though. Obviously it's supposedly all the same driver, just different housing materials/layouts, so as long as one variant survives its not the end of the world. Though Q701's supposed tuning differences seem to be quite popular. (I'm a K702 fan personally...."Stage Blue" all the way
)I still doubt Q701 is going anywhere for a while.

I ordered the black one just in case. Can't beat it for $238 delivered brand new.
post #12 of 296/10/12 at 8:39amI highly doubt they're killing it off. It's one of their best sounding headphones along with the K601.
Maybe they're stopping production on specific colors?
If they do discontinue it, it's going to be a stupid move for AKG I think.
With all these $300+ headphones it's amazing that the Q701 is only $235. Probably the best deal for a headphone ever.
Even the build quality is amazing. How often do you hear about a Q701/K702 falling apart or breaking? Almost never..
