For me, it boils down to vocal or not. If somebody's singing, my attention tends to drift towards parsing the lyrics, so I tend to avoid it... unless it's in a foreign language I don't understand so it comes across as a different kind of musical instrument.
Other than that, it is also the one time less dynamic range music (not strictly in the mastering sense) works better... I guess not the least because the whole point of high dynamic range is that loud parts are -supposed- to draw your attention compared to the quieter parts.
