Eddie Current Electra Electrostatic Amplifier - Page 28

Agree with Livewire, BHSE hands down, either with 007 or 009.

I do like the Electra though. It is a lovely amp.

@ Shun0321

No problem to use a CV 181
Yes use as 40 mA for 6SN7

Little family picture :)

Hi Chaps, I've joined the Electra family. So far I'm finding to make a more significant impact on the SR-007Mk1 than on the SR-009 (coming from a Stax SRM-727A). On the SR-009, it can be a little more treble forward than the SRM-727A but nothing that I'd bright yet. I've literally had it only 2 hrs ago and will need more time with it, and waiting for my 2nd set of Mullard XF2 Quads to arrive (edit: and they have) :-

Edit: And here's my Eddie Current Family :-

Hi all,

I've got some questions about tube rolling on the Electra. As previous post I've inherited Radio_Head's Electra which comes with 2xTung Sols 6SN7, 2x Electro Harmonix 6SN7, and 4x OEM Mullard XF2 EL34's.

They sound great and I'm enjoying the setup but I'm also looking at how else I could tweak by experimenting some different tubes. Pretty much I've been looking at the PSVane/Shuguangs CV181s and EL34PH however I'm also a little confused with their variants and their pricing, especially the CV181's. I've read a little and know the history of how PSVane was formed but am just a little confused about their pricing and which CV181s to go for. I've not had any responses to my thread :-

http://www.head-fi.org/t/693209/psvane-cv181-shuguang-definition-of-different-models

In short there are the following of which their prices vary quite a bit :-

  1. Shuguang CV181-Z Yen 26,191

  2. Classic Grade PSVane Treasure CV181-T Mark II Yen 30,813

  3. Classic Grade PSVane Treasure CV181-T Yen 31,841

  4. PSVane Treasure CV181-T Mark II Yen 35,949

  5. Premium Grade Shuguang Treasure CV181-Z Yen 38,517

  6. Premium Grade PSVane Treasure CV181-T Yen 53,410

Q1: Any recommendations or guidelines as to which CV181 to go for?

Q2: Has anyone compared Mullard EL34 XF2s to the PSVane EL34PH? If so care to share your thoughts or provide recommendations on whether it's worth to try the EL34PHs?

TIA.

Glad to know you're enjoying the Electra Sean.

Quick note on the CV181's - I don't think they're a good idea for the Electra, they actually draw 50% more power than a 6SN7.  I asked Craig about running my ECC32's in the Electra (=CV181), and he said even running one pair was a risk he wouldn't take but running all 4 would almost certainly damage the amp.

As for Psvane EL34's, the only Electra owner I know runs/ran them is driver 8/ader.  I've seen some users on the BHSE thread proclaim it as a great tube but others who had QC issues and it didn't seem like they were rare.

Thx RH!!

Actually I did read about the CV181/ECC32s having a different power draw from the 6SN7s but saw eric65 (or was it superfred?) running that setup. Was looking at RCA red base 5692 too but looks like that's probably a no-go either. Good point of talking to Craig first, as such looks like I'll be dropping that idea. Guess I'll look for other 6SN7 alternatives then.

I'll have to ponder on the EL34PH a little more then. All this tube rolling is really all more for curiosity.

I use the CV181-Z from Shuguang, and they draw the same current as the OEM 6SN7, but they sound better !!

For the output tubes, I now use KT77 Gold Lion from Genalex. They are better too than the OEM EL34.

EL34 are multipurpose tube and the KT77 are especially audio design tube...

Pardon my poor writing ..I'm using a pair of Grade A Shuguang Treasure CV181-Z in the middle  which I found to suite my personal taste . providing both excellent detail and sufficient bass. The NOS 6sn7s i've tried apparently didn't have enough bass , but may have better mids . I thought the Electra was too mid-centric with stock tubes for my liking . So for me the Tungsol/Shuguang/Mullard XF2 or PSvane EL34PH combination gave me the best balance ... Unfortunately one  EL34PH tube went bad :(

What do you mean with "better"/how are they better/what (sound aspects/components) is better?

I use the CV181-Z in the input stage. Amp give more bass and sound is richer and more dynamic than with the stock tube. It was too "clean" for the 009 for my taste...

The KT77 as output tubes, give life to the amp ;)
