Eddie Current Electra Electrostatic Amplifier - Page 3

Sure looks like the aristaeus design with a differential amplifier input and 6l6 for the output tubes.

Same as the bate. Capacitor coupled in the middle.

Output sure looks to be DC coupled because of the tube bias settings on the side.

Nice job for the price. And cheap available tubes.

@Andy Hefley : Thanks so much

Hi. Just thought I could help out with identification of the items on the Electra you mentioned. The "0" on the input selector switch is an off position that selects no input. I thought this was a good idea as I like to change inputs with things turned on it allows for a no Buzz selection without going to the other source which might not be prudent.
The two “green” knobs are pin jacks for a digital volt meter for setting of the bias in the output tubes. The black knob behind it selects which tube the jacks are looking at. In the case with the 6L6’s I recommend setting them at 40mv which is 40ma or just about 20 watts for each tube. The production version may have previsions for other output tubes ie 6CA7’s

Thanks for the info.  It is  good news to know that 6CA7's EL34's can be used.
It's not that I like expensive tubes but because I have several EL34's for my DIY T2 but I don't have any 6L6GC's
especially the GEC KT66
Good news that the Electra can drive the SR009 effectively, how's about the O2mkI?
BTW, what is the peak to peak voltage?  I heard that it is 1800V.   Can it also drive the new Jecklin Float?

Another 6L6 vs 6CA7 vs EL34 debate.  Should be fun.

It wasn't a very good tonal match with the 007mk2.5s, mainly because the mk2s can tend to be bloated sounding. (BTW, he's running some thick sounding tubes, I know how those RCA 6SN7s tend to sound like. I'm going to bring down a pair of more neutral sounding tubes tomorrow like the Sylvanias.)

The good thing is that the midrange doesn't get all wierd and shouty when I crank up the volume, which I have found to be the case with 007/other amp combos. It's got some of that EC sound with the micro dynamic contrasts. Definitely worth checking out with the 009s or Lambdas. Otherwise it's really hard for me to say because he's running a different source, a Sony SACD player which I haven't heard before. There's a part of me that really wants to haul down the PWD.

At T.H.E. Show on the last day, Craig didn't have an O2.  Wish I had brought my O2 to try on the Electra.  SR009 did sound quite nice on the Electra, but I would think the Sony 5400ES SACD/CDP's sonic signature would not get along too well with SR009 sound, and indeed when volume was turned UP, there were traces of hardness and brightness.  Then again, I've heard same type of volume-related sounds with SR009 driven by BHSE, so who knows.  But up to that rather high volume level, SR009/Electra combo certainly had the right purity, microdynamic life, and clarity only heard form top-class 'stat, and I'm sure one can tweak the tubes and cables to one's preferences quite well.

You are Andy of GAS/Ampzilla line right?  You may want to apply to a mod for a "Member of Trade" tag.  I very much look forward to hearing what your guys's amp can do.

LOL, that is ancient history. Like Buck the stereo salesman in Boogie Nights.

Meant MOT as he's working with Craig.

Brought up GAS as part of his pedigree, ie he didn't come out of nowhere.

They sounded good at low volume and even when I cranked it up, the sound was surpisingly non-fatiguing. They made the LCD-2/3s, also at the eddie current booth, sound veiled and muddy in comparison. It was my first time hearing the 009s as well as the electra so I am not sure which made the biggest difference, but they sounded really good together. I must have spent a good 15-20 minutes listening to them while a line formed behind me!

+1.. this combination also dropped my jaw. Had my gf take a listen and her eyes almost popped out of her head.. Annd she's been getting pretty experienced listening to my TH900s, and LCD2/T1/Signature Pros in the past so she's not easily impressed. If I am to ever purchase another headphone the Stax 009 is officially on the save up forever to buy list.

009 would be a nice compliment to your TH900.

Very curious as to how it compares to my HeadAmp KGSS. I also have a morbid curiosity for how it would handle the H2+...

Another 6L6 vs 6CA7 vs EL34 debate.  Should be fun

Dear Kevin, I have heard that 6L6 and El34 are the best sounding power tubes but I have no

experience on 6L6.  what is the difference in sound signature?  which one should be best for

SR009 or O2mkI?

I'll get back to you in a year on that one. Especially considering there are at least 5 different

physical versions of 6L6. Pretty sure that the guy in israel is running fatboys which are 6L6

in his BHSE. One is a beam power tetrode with an internal G3 which makes it very similar

to the pentode in these circuits as both are wired as triodes. There is probably a 5 volt

bias difference between the 2, so i generally don't recommend using 6L6 in the BSHE.

For craigs amp, there should be plenty of bias adjust range to take care of the differences.
