Modding Koss with Skullcandy?

I'm trying to figure out if its possible to take the koss portapro guts and putting them in a skullcandy pair.  I love the look of skullcandy but hate the sound.  So for me,  It would be the best of both worlds.  Do you guys think it would be possible to do such a thing?

The Portapro is, by design, an open-style headphone. You'd need to do some additional modification to a Skullcandy on-ear pair beyond just installing the drivers. The best options would be their on-ears (which, I agree, simply sound like static hiss with blurts of musicality), which you'd have to modify a bit further for openness.

Thank you for getting back to me.  I would really like to do an over-the ear in order to make them more noise canceling.  My biggest issue with doing this is trying to understand how modding works in general.  Do you think I would run into an issue with trying to fit the porta pro speakers into the skullcandy casing?

 

I'm also not quite sure how the wiring works.  Is it extremely complicated?  am I able to use skull candies wiring? Thanks.

The wiring for most headphone designs is extremely simple. You just need some proficiency with a soldering iron (which, trust me, is not a hard thing to learn if you've never done before). Beyond that, you simple match up the right colors of wires and you're set to solder.

 

I think your greatest problem, however, will be with openness. A Portapro driver is probably not your best choice if you want to go for isolation, as they almost literally require an open or semi-open design to sound as sweet as they're acclaimed to sound. You could consider, perhaps, a Monoprice 8323, but its drivers may not fit in some Skullcandy products, which are notorious for having little 30-mm drivers on multiple occasions.

I think that he's looking at a small investment, however, which the two respectable Skullcandy cans (the other being the Mix Master) cannot achieve.

You are correct.  I actually already own the Koss headphones so I would like to use them.  I am just looking to purchase a pair of skullcandy's and want to figure out which ones the koss would fit into, and wire nicely, and be able to sound decent (with adding a little more noise canceling, not so much for myself but for others around me).  I put a bunch of links up earlier for ones that I am looking at (since they are on sale).  Do you have a suggestion on which pair to get?

Are there even cooler headphones out there (only using the casing so it would have to be cheap)?

The problem with this whole endeavor is that you simple won't get both the PortaPro sound with an isolating, closed headphone. You'd have to mod it to be more open, which would eliminate the functional aspect of the design, while keeping the visual to a certain extent.

Isn't another inherent problem is that Skullcandy's usually have a very poor build quality?
