Calyx FEMTO DAC - Page 8

From the last few posts I understand that the DAC which sounds better with PC transport than with a dedicated CD transport is yet to come.

I had great expectations for my Weiss DAC202U to make the lossless files better than CDs but its SPDIF input is significantly better than the firewire... :)

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Have a question if someone could help me out, how do you check what firmware your running

Edit: nvm found it

It will be interesting to hear comparison with Overdrive and the new Invicta, biggrin.gif that is a 6800 vs 6000 vs 5000 fight, wow ...

Don't mean to derail this thread, but how do these 5k+ DACs compare with the audio-gd M7? Been finding DACs to be quite a difficult subject to research. I can understand why 2.5k DACs costs more than 1-1.5k, but beyond 2.5k not sure what additional components/function you're paying for. Looking to resolve my ignorance, thanks :P

I didn't know how to improve from my already excellent NFB-2 until I listen to Ref. 7.1. I listened to a 5K DAC, there are some aspects that is better then my 2K DAC, but also there are some that can't beat my current DAC (personal preference apply here).
I also curious if other > 5K DAC can really trounce my DAC completely.

I mentioned somewhere, but never in this thread, so I'll add it here.

Finally got to hear a Femto. Looks freakin' amazing and sounds quite good too. I still like the Resonessence Invicta more (and that's the original Invicta, not even the upgraded Mirus), and I thought the Auralic Vega was slightly better too. But the Femto handily beat an Esoteric D-07X, D-05, and the expensive dCS Elgar Plus. So I definitely have respect for the Calyx Femto where before I was a little skeptical.

John, which one do you prefer, the Auralic Vega or Invicta?

I thought the Invicta was better by just a hair. Vega was extremely impressive though, and if you consider the lower price and the potentially more pleasing looks, it might actually be a better choice for some people.

Yep, heard one recently, didn't care for it at all. I know lots of people who I respect that love the Mytek.... but I just didn't connect with it.

If this is in reference to the Mytek, I mostly tried it as a DAC, but did spend a small amount of time with the amp section. Didn't like it either way. The owner who brought it over loved it though.

Here's my take:

I had the Calyx DAC 24/192, which is a single ES9018 version of the Femto, without the better power supply the Femto looks to have built-in. Using better power and my Audiophilleo 1/PP I managed to get the Calyx DAC up to the level of my Reference 7.1, but sounding a bit livlier. If I fed it with the new USB32-based Digital Interface, the sound changed a little and they were fairly indistinguishable. The Master 7 is better still, but in being seemingly able to do everything at once -- that is, being detailed, engaging and organic. So if the Femto does more or less what the DAC 24/192 did after I add all my improvements, then great, but it is expensive.

I spent some time with the Invicta at a meet and it was a bit too technically-perfect-sounding for me, like the Anedio I'm using at the moment.

Thanks Currawong, excellent information. I'm DAC shopping at the moment looking to buy next year. At this stage, leaning towards the audio-gd M7 and waiting to see what the Schiit statement DAC will be.

Yeah it's definitely not a super high value option, like many people thought their original DAC was. That case on the Femto has gotta cost a pretty penny.

Sounds like someone has figured out my preferred sound signature, at least as far as DACs go. And I think I've got yours down as well. Based on that I don't necessarily think the Femto would replace your Master 7, but you maybe would like it more than the Vega or Anedio or Invicta. Different strokes and all that.

That is interesting. I own the mytek, and i like it alot, so much so that upgrading hasnt really crossed my mind since i got it. The pretty much unanimous praise for the mytek was what got me to buy it afterall. I would love to try the invicta, to see what the deal is, but it seems they are scarce here in hong kong. Thanks for your input! I'll work hardwr to get one for comparison.
