which headphones for movies: Denon D2000 / AKG K550 / Beyerdynamic T70

Hi, I'm choosing closed full-size headphones, mainly for movies, secondarily for music. I can't say if I'm basshead or not, but I want to feel when bomb booms. But simultaneously I'd like to hear large sound stage. So I expect some compromise is necessary. Also I want isolation, datailed sound and good build quality.

 

I have firstly chosen ATH M50, then I got to Denon D2000 and now moreover I cast glances at ATH-A900X, Shure 940, AKG K550 or Beyerdynamic T70. I just need help narrowing my choice by those of you who actually heard any of these cans. I also would like not to spent too much, so +10 % of S.Q. for 50 % of price is not a good choice for me (I'm from Europe, so prices may vary).

 

I expect to plug the headphones in Audio-GD NFB 12 or Audinst HUD-mx1.

I've been using using the ATH-A900X for 12 days,

The sound is what I was looking for, lighter bass then my DT770 and not a perfect seal, which gives me just the right amount of bass I was looking for.

But not sure they are worth the $256 I paid for them.

The wings are not stiff enough to keep the cups centered on my ears, the cups slide down and ride to top of my ears.

A rubber band helps (some), now the headphones ride up so now the cups touch the bottom of my ears.

Guess I just have to find the right size rubber band.

The AKG K550 seems to be getting better reviews then the A900X.

Yes, it seems similar to me. The only question is - what about bass in case of AKG K550? Anyone with knowledge?

Heya,

 

I would say you already have a good headphone for your needs with the Denon D2000.

 

The D2000 is superior to the A900X in my ears and more comfortable. The SRH940 is not something you'll want since it's very bass shy, you won't enjoy not feeling the booms during a movie. The T70 is pretty neutral, a good headphone, but not overly bassy either. The K550 is neutral and capable of dropping low notes as well, like the Denon, and has better isolation, but isn't quite as comfortable. It would be a side grade, if anything.

I just got a pair of T70s and they are simply gorgeous. Crisp highs, deep rumbling bass but not overpoweringly so, also a very nice sound stage for closed headphones.
I'd wholeheartedly recommend them for movies.

OK, I narrowed my choice as follows:

Denon D2000 ($370) (i might misspelled - I don't have them, I was just thinking about them)

AKG K550 ($270)

Beyerdynamic T70 ($510)

The dollar prices are converted from our currency.

 

Actually, I tend to K550 now. The question is if Denon has enough soundstage, or if AKG's bass and SQ is good enough, or if it worths ti oay extra for Beyerdynamics (might sound great, but they are imho overpriced).

That is a lot of money for those Beyers.
While I personally would prefer them to the D2000 or K550, I'm not sure I'd pay that much for them. I got mine much cheaper than that. Maybe you could look for used ones.

ok, thanx for your advices. After reading up a lot of reviews I just have ordered K550.

I'm looking forward to them. Expect me to ask for help with a DAC soon :)

Any comparison in term of soundstage, separation, mids between Beyerdynamic T70 vs AKG K550?

I have watched countless movies on the computer with my old D2000's. They fit the bill best just because of comfort. But they handle the extreme dynamic range of movie mastering quite well and the low-end absolutely sells it for the full cinema experience.
