MD recording questions..(optical out?)

post #1 of 9

I just got my Sharp MDMT877 minidisc player today, and was wondering about various recording methods. I can obviously just do analog recording from my soundcard (turtle beach santa cruz), but unfortunately it does not have an optical out, it has the other type... What I was wondering was this: I have the sound card hooked up to my receiver via the digital out of my soundcard to the digital in. The receiver has an optical digital out... can I hook up the MD player to the receiver and record mp3s from the
computer->receiver->MD ?
Will this have better sound quality than the analog out directly from the soundcard? (digital is obviously better but in this case it has several things to pass through.. hence my question..)

thanks

well, if you stick with digital for the entire route, there should be very little loss. if your reciever will actually work as an electrical-optical converter, sounds like a nice solution. I dunno if the line-out of your comp will be any good, but it's always more convenient to use digital as you won't need to seperate tracks.

Well, not if it's from a soundcard. Track marks are copied ONLY when the digital signal is coming from a CD player... (I think)

hm, dunno, don't really use my comp for audio too much. sounds familiar tho...well, digital is better anyway even if you have some extra components in line, unless your source is very good.

i have an sblive with a digital out. Is it possible to record onto minidiscs with the digital out? the analog out is giving poor quality recordings.

well i guess another possibility is to get a coaxial->toslink/optical convertor if you only have a coax digital out on your soundcard...right?

thanks for the replies, the receiver works beautifully, sounds pretty damn good too imo.
