Looking to upgrade my HD650s.

Thread Starter

I currently have the Senns HD650s and I really like them. But I want to upgrade. I am planning to spend somewhere around/close to ~$1000 USD. I am looking and I am open to options, but I am considering either the HD 700 or the Audeze LCD-2.

What's your experience with either of these headphones?

If I decide to buy either of them, (I have the Headroom Desktop Amp/DAC) will that be enough for either of them? Or should I also upgrade my amp/DAC?

Listen mostly to rock. Pink Floyd, Led Zep, U2, Elton John, Dire Straits, etc.

TLDR; looking to upgrade HD650s, considering LCD-2. Wondering if I should also upgrade amp/DAC.

Honestly the LCD-2 /3 is not one of those headphones I can listen to for hours.  They are really neutral from 5Hz to 1kHz, but they just do not keep my toe tapping like my AH-D2000 do.

You may have the idea that in order to upgrade you have to go more expensive, but for me this is often not the case.  More expensive does not mean better than in so many situations.  Most importantly you probably want something that really stimulates your ears and makes your music even more fun to listen to.  That was my case when I had the HD-650 driven by my m903.  The sound was a tad too neutral and veiled for my taste.

I would suggest starting with the Denon AH-D2000 and then try the new AKG K550.  Both have a more upfront sound and better bass reproduction which works so much better for rock.  The veil of the HD-650 really limits the mids presentation as well as how the kick drum impacts.

I think you will really like the Denon AH-D2000, but be sure to check out these charts and decide which fits your listening needs better:

I think the AKG K550 is built a little better than the Denon so you may want to try it first.  It will be a big change from the HD-650 sound and you may end up loving it as much as I have.

Best of luck.

I've not listened to any of your suggested upgrades, but from reading, most people consider HE-500 the most natural upgrade from HD650.  With that you can also consider upgrading your amp/dac as well.  LCD-2 looks neutral from 5hz to 3-4khz to me.

I was going to suggest the HE-500, but why not try something less expensive and see if you like it.  I think if you get them from headroom and hate them they have a 30-day no questions asked money back option.  Then you can try the HE-500.

Unless he clearly wants a lot more bass than the HD-650, I see no reason to go D2000 over it as the HD650 bests the D2000 in nearly every category of sound except for bass extension and impact.

You know that quite a bunch people prefer the hd650 to the hd700 or even the hd800 ? I know this after reading many discussion here. Perhaps you should say what you don't like on the hd650, and what you are looking for.

This.

Unless OP is a basshead who despises the HD650 due to a lacking of bass presence, D2k is gonna be a sonic downgrade from HD650.

I own the HD650 and wanted to upgrade.  Bought the LCD2 however differences are not night and day due to the fact that I haven't updated my amp.  I think if you go from HD650 to LCD2 you will have to upgrade your amp also to realize a big gain in performance.
