For me:  eek.gif

HE-6

HD800

LCD-3

I owned the LCD3 and HD800 and have listened to the HE-6 on multiple occassions, mostly w/ the Mjolnir.

Between the 3 headphones, I place the LCD3 slightly above the HD800, and both headphones above the HE6.  IMO LCD3 excells at musicality, bass detail, neutrality, impact and sounds more lush/rich.  I thought the HD800 excelled at soundstage, overall detail, speed, and sounds airy/open.  I felt the HE6 was more neutral, impactful, and had a richer sound than the HD800, but at a substantial cost to detail, speed, comfort, and soundstage.  I did not feel that the HE6 bested the LCD3 in really anything, besides maybe soundstage. Overall I felt that the HE6 shared alot of the characteristics of the LCD3 and HD800 and did nothing wrong really, but also did not excel in anything either.  Whereas I feel the HD800 and LCD3 also do nothing wrong, but have more to offer in that they are best of its kind w/ regard to many things.

I sold my HD800 to fund my purchase of my LCD3, I don't regret doing that, but I still crave aspects of the HD800.  The HD800 imo is the best compliment to the LCD3.

I agree with your findings on the "Mjolnir"  This really is a great amp for the LCD-3 IMO.  However, at the same time it restricts the HE-6 of it's capabilities - again IMO.  Here are a few data points with a long journey with the HE-6..

The Mjolnir = OK

The GS-X mkII = OK

The BHA-1 = Not good

The Balanced B22 = OK

The Emotiva a-100 = on the better side of OK - pretty good.

Emotiva UPA-1s mono blocks = Good- better than the a-100

Rotel RMB-100 mono blocks = Good better than the a-100 on the same level as the UPA-1s with less of a sound stage.

Beta 24 speaker amp = Good - not as good as either of the mono blocks

Sim Audio Moon 600i / 700i Integrated Amps = The best I've ever heard (went to the audio store)  cost way to much money.

PrimaLuna Tube power amp and integrated amps = Did just OK

Audio GD Master 3 = very good / warm, intimate less airy and open smaller sound stage when compared to the F1J.

First Watt F1J = The best I've heard that I can afford.  Paired with the PWD mkII is really awesome.

That F1J is prolly where I'll go if I ever decide to upgrade my Alesis... hoping for 15% better sound for 15x the cost lol...

I have the LCD3 and Mojo and they work very nicely together but from what I read the HE6 needs ROCKET-FULE so I've stayed away thus far.  May try to run it through my speaker amp at some point though.  Have the HE500 through speaker amp and enjoy them very much.

I had the gungnir/mjolnir combo and all three headphones and the decision really came to sell my LCD3 once I got the McIntosh mc250. The HE6 went from #3 to #1 for a month after the amp upgrade and putting LCD3 pads on them, but now I would place it neck and neck with the 800's (depending on the genre of music I'd be listening to).

Also after just receiving the NAD M51 last week, the synergy with the Senn/Hifiman is definitely an upgrade; whereas with the LCD3, the bass would maybe have become even more upfront and overwhelming for me.

I think an LCD3 sounds best with a more forward sounding amp, hence why mjolnir, BHA-1 (which i' ve also owned while I had the LCD3 and HE6, but 800's were being replaced @ Senn Germany) and GSX mk II are good choices by many. These solid states also do a great job at opening up space for the LCD3, which was one of its drawbacks to me.

15x the cost?   The F1J cost me $1.5K  Is that still 15x the cost?wink_face.gif

HE6 and HD800 are on par for me, depending on my mood. In my set up HE6 is a bit more forward with a bit more narrow but focused sound stage; while HD800 is wider and tad a bit smoother. I have to concur with everyone who said that for HE6 you need good amplification to get good bass. I listen to a lot of electronic music, and I love my HE6 for that. The bass is nuanced and has enough thump.

LCD-3 never enamored me, and for the cost I would be thinking of starting Omega mk2 set up -- getting the Stax, an energizer and saving for a good e-amp. And that's b/c I have the other TOTL cans with good amps and DACS. I know the Stax is sig more in cost, but if you are gonna drop 2K, why not drop a bit more and have an endgame set up.

The boominess of the LCD is a novelty at first, then gets tiring. It took several tries for them to get the LCD to sound decent (3 finally does) but it's still too obnoxious for my tastes. I fit in between stats, HE-6's and the HD-800s. All hit the mark with proper amping.

Three different amps.  Are you down for that?wink_face.gif

I'm thinking about entering into Stax land..  So yes, yet another amp to buy.  Not to mention the 009s.  If I can pull of the amp this year. I'll wait until next year to get the 009s..  Long road ahead..

I am in! but I think it will be a longer road for me. I have already reached the limits of my wife's understanding with the PWD purchase. tongue_smile.gif

Happy with my HE6 and HD800 for now. And really looking forward to the GSX knocking on my door!
