Hey - that just may be the case.

I have a feeling this one goes firmly into amp design territory, and not expectation bias.  I may very well be wrong, but I'd love to get the take of an experienced professional amp designer on the topic before jumping to conclusions about it.  If Justin of Headamp stops by this thread at any point, perhaps he can explain his comment in the main HE-6 thread about a speaker amp probably being ideal if driving only HE-6 was the goal.   it struck me that someone that knows what he's talking about to the point of knowing the limitations of his own otherwise adequate HP amp design compared to a speaker amp may be able to enlighten us as to exactly why that may be the case...I.E. what a speaker amp may do differently at the same output current.    I'm sure there's a similar reason why a headphone amp powerful enough to drive HE-6 wouldn't be used to drive floor standing speakers, even with the same input voltage is applied.  Impedance must have a role in there somewhere.

I agree we need someone with more knowledge to settle this, I'm just going on what I know about two specific amps.

Alternatively preproman could do a blind test of his monoblocks vs. beta 22, level matched to 0.1 dB and report back evil_smiley.gif assuming the monoblocks are sufficiently good wink.gif

Define sufficiently good.  I have never level matched before and don't have the tool. maybe Happy Camper has one and we can do somethng like this next time we have one of our mini meets.

It entirely depends on the speakers you're using.  When I had Tannoy Revolution DC4s, the volume was at nearly the same position for the Tannoys and HE-6s when using a Wyred 4 Sound mINT.

I'd say 4-6 db without using a db meter but preferred listening level and the vol. knob. I use a NHT passive vol. and it's marked in db.

Yeah ppm, I have one.

I posted in the 6 thread but I think the reason the speaker amps perform better is the size of their power supplies. Bigger/more capacitors and bigger transformers. It's a deeper well to drink from and the 6s are pigs.

I wonder how many of the 98 that voted in this thread have actually listened to both headphones, properly amplified, much less spent any quality time with them.

i did not vote because i did not have the lcd-3(only had lcd-2 rev. 1 and 2) and i think that i don´t ever buy, but my impression is that the hifiman with right amp is in the hp´s olympus(near to stax queenrolleyes.gif)

now you can whip mebiggrin.gif

I think it is funny to read (mainly from HE-6 owners) how the HE-6 needs to be properly amplified to sound best.  Isnt that the case with any headphone or speaker?

You can almost transform any "so so" headphone into a great headphone with the right source and amplification.

I did not vote as I have not audtioned the HE-6.

Truth is, I would like to get my hands on a pair to see what all the fuss is about.  smily_headphones1.gif

Agreed but with all other phones it's mainly a case of synergy and SQ, with the HE6's it's synergy, SQ and POWER.

It's still about power with most other mid-fi/TOTL headphones, just not near as much. The only headphone that I've experienced that needs as much power as the HE6 is the K1000. Maybe the Sextetts and some others too like vintage orthos but I'm not sure.

Seems like it's more than just POWER.

My well-burned-in HE-6 sounds good with my DNA Stratus 2A3, which is ~2wpc and drives the K1000 very well. It sounds better (tighter bass, clarity, depth, etc) with my ss Odyssey Cyclops Extreme, which is 100wpc and TAS approved.

But my Fi 421A arrived a couple weeks ago, and its 4wpc makes my HE-6 sing -- better sound quality than I have ever heard on headphones.

FOOTNOTE -- That statement is only true when I have it connected through the HE-adapter impedance matching box. It's not just power.

--- can't wait to replace its carbon resistors with the Mills and Shinkoh pieces that are on the way ----

Received a new pair of HE-6 this morning.

Will "try" and give them some break in time before comparing...

2 against 1!  Does the Audeze have a chance?

make sure to use velour on both hifiman!

Velour sounds better than Pleather on the HE's?
