The XBA-4s did open up with burn in for me. So listen to them for a few more days and see if anything changes for you.

Thanks for the information, I will try to burn them in and tolerate their sound longer. Otherwise you guys will see them in for the for sale board shortly. LOL.

The Audio-Techna ATH-CK100Pro are very detailed in mids and highs with good bass extention, incase if you return Sony XBA4 then CK100Pro are highly recommended.

The W4R's mids isn't recessed at all, seriously. I could actually go to saying it's mid-centric or mid-forward. It may sound veiled, I admit, but recessed isn't the right word to use on these.

as i said, "somewhat" recessed since i can't find the better term for it. i always remember the tf10, which has recessed midrange, when i try the w4r and i still find the um3x midrange better, more forward and more imtimate than the w4r.

everything is subjective so take it with a pinch of salt

Slightly recessed as in below the neutral line...  I'll agree with that statement actually :p

Well, that's why... if you compare anything to the UM3x, anything would sound recessed in comparison. The UM3x has one of the most closed-in, intimate soundstage and one of the most forward midrange. In fact someone even said the midrange was too forward that the vocals covered the drum beats. Sure the 4R doesn't have the most forward midrange as compared to the SE535 and UM3x, but I wouldn't really say they are recessed :p, just that those 2 are too forward in one way or another.
