I would like to thank Mike at Meelectronics for the review sample of their new flagship IEM the A161p. These are currently available for pre-order on Meelectronics website for $99.99, with the first batch shipping in a little over a week.

Hi keanex,

Was your 'review sample' free and if a freebie do you get to keep it? Or did you purchase this product at a later date?

TIA.

It depends upon the company, but this product was free. If you're wondering about bias due to free items then you should check my Brainwavz M5 review. I do my best to give a fair opinion on how I feel about a product. Think of it this way, if I were to write a glowing review about a mediocre product then my reviews would be taken with a grain of salt! I stand by the A161p even months later.

I've been looking for an IEM for day to day at the gym, I think the 161s will fit the bill. I mostly listen to audio books(crap audio, I tell you what), but occasionally music while working out, tho rarely. My Shure SE530s bit the bucket. Not certain if I dropped them or if water got in the right channel, but I'm starting to realize how much I miss them. Hoping these little IEMs can fulfill my day to day stuff until I get some custom IEMs. Likely JA or UM. Both seem to review well - no chance of me auditioning them where I am. Oh well.

Well, the 161s price point/performance is adequate. Compared to the Shure SE530's? Underwhelming. The 161s perform in their price bracket, but IMHO don't have much of a soundstage at all. Then again, I'm lacking a good source at this point. Maybe I'll have more to say about them when I can drive them better.

I took a left turn somewhere since this last post. I'm entering the full size headphone scene, as I figure I don't use IEM's like they should. I think I will appreciate decent audio at home, and I don't think any IEM will ever get close to say Stax SR-009s. I got a fantastic deal on the Sen HD800's I just couldn't refuse.  So I'm starting there.  So now I'm just looking at a lot of choices for DAC/AMPs etc.

Gotta hand it to head-fi. The site has me hooked. Can't wait for the HD800's to show.

How would these stack up against the A151p? I prefer the over-the-ear design of the A151p but their cheaper price leaves me wondering about their sound quality. Should I sacrifice over-the-ear for better sound? Also, how are the A161p vs. the TDK BA200?

Thanks in advance

No comparison to the BA200.  However, in contrast to the A161p, the A151p take a hit on treble as they lack the top-end sparkle and presence.  The midrange also has a bit of a sweeter sound and the bass has a larger body, though at the expense of a little speed and tightness.
