Unboxing videos.....why? - Page 6

I actually appreciate the comments some unboxers make about build quality and aesthetics and fail to see how some teenagers embracing a YouTube trend is detrimental to this community.

Because it makes head-fi and the headphone enthusiast community shallow and superficial.  For the past 7 years on head-fi I've watched the "Build Quality" and "packaging" sections of reviews get longer and longer, and the "sound quality" section get shorter and shorter.  Often times the sound quality section is an afterthought.  You read eloquent flowery prose about the box and twist ties, and then the sound quality section is vague and confused.

True, I didn't mean to condemn that stuff.  It's not the same.  At least porn is a video of the actual act in question.  The headphone enthusiast equivalent to porn would be more like watching people listening to Orpheuses, which would be totally harmless, though probably pretty boring.  ;-)  Unboxing videos aren't about headphones at all.  It's just about feeling the rush of consumerism.

Sound quality of a headphone or any audio gear is very subjective. I don't think one can make a buying decision based on anyone's review. I take a combination of reviews, unboxing, and manufacture reputation when deciding on buying something.

Example is Tyle of InnerFidelity liked the Denon D5000 so much that he put it on his "wall of fame" while the Denon D7000 did not make the cut. I found the D5000 was not Hi-Fi enough for me, but the D7000 is.

Unboxing videos are porn for consumer whores.  People watch them for the same reason they watch sexual porn.

These unboxing videos aren't about headphones at all.  It's just about feeding people's rampant out of control addiction to buying stuff (consumerism).  People get a little high when they buy things.  They have delusions, some subtle and some more gross, about how that thing is going to change their lives and bring them happiness.  But they can't afford to buy enough to fill the void, so watching unboxing videos triggers a similar emotional response and gets them through until their next real fix when they can buy something themselves and....omg...open a real box...in real life!!!

I throw up a little bit everytime I see one posted on head-fi.

Hehe.

I don't think unboxing videos are that bad. They're occasionally useful but that's mostly just because PR photos are never to be trusted and manufacturer descriptions are usually woefully incomplete.  Just seeing something in motion and with a sense of scale can be useful and let you get a handle on ergonomics which I think even you admit can be a deal breaker.  biggrin.gif  Showing what accessories are included is pretty useful too.  It's not too important with full size headphones and probably wouldn't be a deal breaker even with portables but I'd still like to know if it doesn't come with something that I think is essential so I can order one along with the headphone instead of finding out afterwords and have to wait around for a few extra days after I got the headphones

Those are pretty much the only reasons I ever watch unboxing videos.

I think the most practical thing to get out of an unboxing video is for size comparisons, in an event where said headphones/earphones/amp/etc. can't be found locally in a physical store, or if any picture of it wasn't compared to anything in my possession. Size can be a dealbreaker for some people looking for a new purchase. Other than that, it's just a time waster for procrastinating laziness. At least for me.

And I agree with maverickronin.

edited to be more clear...

Nailed it.

What has happened to Head-Fi? Used to be highlighted by wonderful, concisely written reviews by people like Zanth and Kelly. Now it's seems like a pathetic free-for-all where often misinformed and misled obsessive compulsive addicts use pointless unboxing videos in order to trigger massive endorphin rushes that trigger headphone buying sprees, and everyone is delighted with their new toy for about five minutes. Then off we go again.

Zanth, the guy who prefers a GS1000 or a PS-1000 to a HP1-2-3 or a PS-1, in the reviews that got featured on Gradolabs.com? The John Grado fanboy who has shut down an intellectual and peaceful thread, calling the OP a "troll", in which people were healthily and rightfully conversing, curious to... discover about the origin of the drivers in their headphones?

I don't want to attack his person, but I'm definitely discrediting his subjective Grado reviews, and criticizing his ability to distinguish facts and evidences from one man's assertion. He seen it as a conflict and an attack of the company he made himself the defender of, but it's wasn't even an attack in the first place, so he acted blinded by his love for the company.

You guys are trying to make Head-Fi look worst than it actually is.

Have you seen this recent photo album? http://www.head-fi.org/gallery/album/view/id/24593/user_id/153531

Don't tell me you're not enjoying it for at least a bit, and don't tell me you would have shun it completely if it would have been in the form of a nice and concise HD video, with commentaries from the new owner, like first impressions (about the weight, built quality feel, included accessories), in a decent lighting and shot with a nice and stable camera...

You're telling bad things about a Head-Fi you're not even a part of anymore. You probably have no idea of all the good things that are happening in the T50RP, SR60 mod or (the very objective) headphone recommendations threads, and the recent reviews about IEMs people like Tomscy, ClieOS and many others that are doing it very nicely and productively. Yes concise and informative reviews, about the product itself and not the packaging.

Yes endorphin rushes, what not, and why not, if you like it? Don't put them all in the same basket of the compulsive addicts, you know it's not the case for most of us, and certainly not the case of the whole modern Head-Fi community your despise is not helping.

I bet you're not into porn either.... ;-)

Personally, I enjoy unboxing vids when I'm anticipating the arrival of a highly prized thing. Easy to make fun of, sure, and not for everyone. But I bet you've got a few things you're into that would make most people go whaaaaaa????!!????

Lighten up. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch any unnecessary video.

It's worse than a striptease. It's like you're watching a porno and the opening shot is a long pan across the floor, clothes strewn about, and just before the camera pans to the bed to reveal the slightly stoned 19 year old about to dissociate to her happy place for an hour in order to make some money to put her through community college, it pans back and begins to zoom in on the clothes.

"Here we see the acrylic platform heels and next to them a neon pink polyester thong, with the 9.95$ price tag from Fantasy Gifts still hanging from it. From this distance they emanate a sweet mix of perfume, disinfectant and parental abuse."

The only use I can find for unboxing videos is if I need to pack something back into it's box but can't remember how it fits inside.

I usually take a few photos while unboxing for this very requirement. You never know when you need to return something. Some of these products seem like they expand upon removal from the box. Can't get them back in.
