I'm also finding the RCA 5U4G rectifier helps with the Sophia's. It adds much needed warmth. The EML 5U4G can sound cold.

After listening to the Stratus for the last week, I went back to the BHA-1 and it seemed cold and analytical. I never used to think that about the BHA-1, one of the smoothest sounding SS amps I've heard. But now it sounds almost robotic pushing out that extra bit of last detail. This is great for fast, complex type music (electronica, metal), but for slower, mellower type stuff, tube is the way to go. Also, I have to admit I'm getting older and slower and so are my musical tastes, which is apparently affecting my taste in amps.

I have some NOS tubes incoming. Some rare and ridiculously expensive. Pics to come...

Would you guys say the HD800's requires a lot of power to shine?

How much does it puts out into 300 and 600 ohms ?

Kind of hard to say, but there was a discussion where few people proved me wrong that the HD800's don't require a lot of juice to sound fine, especially with regards to the graph of > 600ohms at 100hz. Than spritzer commented that the HD800's require a lot of juice (not ortho wise) to sound best and I'm also sort of inclined to this as well by my ear's. So far I am confused at which is right as it's currently an objective vs subjective argument. Sigh...

Maybe not required but probably helps. The HD800 through my m903 sounds very good and technically proficient but somewhat flat; the Stratus makes it the most musically involving headphone experience I've ever had.

The smooth sounding RCA 2A3 tube....

Nice! Do you have a favorite 2A3 yet?

The romantic RCA/Cunningham monoplate...

All RCA NOS tubes (5U4G, 2A3, and 6BQ7A) on this Stratus!

Has anyone seen my wallet? I think it hates me right now!

With the Senns? Yes and it's by a good margin. Pics of this mysterious 2A3 to come soon! wink_face.gif

The HD650 sound beautiful with the RCA monoplates, though. It's close. The RCA's have an awesome low end. Almost three-dimensional like in its impact. While the "mystery" tube opens up the HD650 at the top quite a bit. Like the "veil" never existed. Two extremely smooth tubes yet with different focuses in the tonal spectrum.

Lovin' the RCA monoplates with the W3000ANV, LCD2.1 and HE500. Surprisingly, the LCD3 and HD800 don't sound as special. Maybe it has something to do with their slightly recessed midrange that the RCA's are emphasizing even more. Or it could be my ears.

Is it worth getting the HD650 if I already have the HD800? I could use a more relaxed change up at times, the HD800 commands my attention when I listen to it.

I would get the HD580s before I got the HD650s as a complement to the HD800s, especially with the Stratus.
