I think someone asked earlier for a photo of the interior:

And some close-up action shots:

What do these photos tell us about the internals of the Stratus?

I'll leave that for someone who knows about electronics.

All I can offer is that it is very elegant.

Not that I asked, but I appreciate the photos Duckman.  For me it shows the craftsmanship of DNA.  It also shows me his style regarding point to point wiring and construction techniques.

It's nice to see innards of various amps, it's good to compare them to other manufacturers'.  The more you know!

The photos are great. Thanks for posting Duckman. It does look very organised in there. I know there are knowledgable people here who modify amps and build their own. I was interested in their thoughts, but they'd probably be wasted on me as I'm not technically minded. frown.gif

Let me add my thanks for the photos, too, Duckman. That takes some doing. And they're good fotos. Thank you.

I did some modding on my Sonett, which I posted in the Sonett thread, and I see lots of similar construction details and the forward thinking about magnetic crosstalk. I see also some items I changed to good effect in my Sonett, but I'm not about to change ANYTHING inside my Stratus, because I love the SQ it has, the 2D4 presence, yes, the "humidity" (!!!), and I don't want to lose that. That's what Donald's experience and his ear produced, and I am very happy with my Stratus as he built it.

ok, yes, with different TUBES !

Putting my Stratus up for sale once again, and hoping some local Aussies will be interested. It would be nice to keep it in Melbourne.

In spite of the better tubes, I'm finding its 'up close and personal' nature just slightly confronting when paired with my LCD3 and, unfortunately the other top-end dynamics just don't do it for me.  So it's either back to estats or more dynamic amp experimentation.

There's no accounting for taste, I guess.

Thanks for the memories, Donald.

Sad to hear that, Duckman, it was nice having you around. Maybe you should look into a Smyth Realizer. A buddy here loves it, and I've been thinking about it, too.

The other recommendation would be the K1000, the earspeakers. Donald built this amp to fit those. You can even physically adjust the distance from your ears. Have you ever had those on your head?

Duckman, sorry to hear that.

Another great amp I'd suggest you try is the Phonitor. It does wonders to my LCD-2 (haven't tried the LCD-3 though).

Having said that, I'm interested in your EML's smily_headphones1.gif

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Bud: I used to have a Realiser. Amazing piece of equipment, and really worth getting if you watch a lot of movies at home. Wish I still had it, but really didn't use it enough to justify.

Heard the K1000 through the Stratus last Sunday. Good, but not my cup of tea.

Mad Bull: I used to have the Auditor (close enough? :-) I'd like to hear it with all those mods fejnomit speaks of though.

Well, so long as the Stratus hasn't sold, I'm still in, and will continue to be interested in this thread.

For what it's worth, the EML solids are still my favourite tube with the LCD3. Just slightly less euphonic than the Princess, but IMO, with greater clarity, particularly in the low end.

On the other hand, echoing Bud's view, my HD800 friend preferred the Princess pair for his phones.

Wow, you've been actively searching for the presentation you want. I wish you success in finding the right combo.

Glad to know you're still with us for now.

Yes, the EMLs both have more powerful bass, and the solids are really "solid", as fejnomit said.

Thanks - glad to hear another vote for the Princess / HD800 setup. It's not just my imagination!

Someone down under is going to be very happy.  But it makes sense, Duckman, if you're an Electrostatic Man (sounds like a '70s sci-fi thriller).  The 2A3 is not a tube that allows you to kick back and enjoy the last drop of detail.  It's a bull fighting tube.  You might want to email James at Stefan Audio Art.  He's the one who does the Phonitor mods.  It's my reference amp for mixing and listening.  And like the Stratus, I find it truly phenomenal with all headphones.  When I want to really rock out I turn to the BA and, now more, the Stratus, but there is a level of refinement and detail to the *modded* Phonitor that I have never heard elsewhere.  That being said, to my ears, the Hifimans are better suited to its sound signature than the Audeze's - but that is entirely a matter of taste, as you've noted.  This from someone who loves the K1000/Stratus combo, so insert grain of salt...  Apropos the fine Austrians, I have both bass light and bass heavy versions of the K1000 and I actually prefer the bass light with the Stratis, especially with the EML 5U4G rectifier plumping up the bottom end (I won't say what that sounds like...)
