DNA Stratus 2A3 amplifier - first impressions - Page 146

Following dubstepgirl's ridiculously descriptive list would be a daunting task. Also I'm hesitent still because I only own one 2A3 amp. The Stratus may be imparting its own characteristic to the tube's sound and the descriptions of each tube wouldn't be so definitive. For example, people with way more experience than I swear by the J/J 2A3's sound. But on the Stratus + PWD2, it's way too uneven sounding. On another amp, it may sound wonderful. My experience is only limited to the Stratus and a few DAC's.

I can come up with a list of personal favorite 2A3's but bare in mind the caveats above.

has anyone tried an IEM with their Stratus? Just curios of the results

I prefer a fast solid state sound with Audeze cans. The EML mesh plate 2A3 comes closest with its even midrange and top to bottom extension and control. The solid plates are warmer but lose some of that evenness and top end extension. The AVVT solid plate closes the gap quite a bit but is just slightly less extended than the EML meshies. (I can only imagine the AVVT meshies would close the gap even further and possibly surpass the EML's. But that is but a dream right now.) For a more tube-ish sound, I like the ridiculous smoothness of the LCD3F through old stock Sylvania/GE double flat plates. Very midcentric but warm sounding and not as rolled off as RCA's. I also like the stock 2A3B with the LCD3 surpisingly moreso than its big brother 2A3C-T. I find the black-bottled Shuguang has a slight exaggeration in the midbass and treble that feels sloppy on the LCD3 to me, at least in my setup (Cantata CD => Stratus). But some may prefer its tube-y sound. To me, the 2A3B plays the safer route with less bumps on the road.

My Top 5 2A3's with the LCD3/3F:

AVVT solid plate
EML mesh plate
Sylvania/GE double flat plates
Shuguang 2A3B
Svetlana 2C4C (Solid, fast low end with decent top extension. Great with rock music.)

My top 5 2A3 with the HD800 (unmodded, stock cable):

Shuguang 2A3C-T - Here the exaggerated bass is a strength. The HD800's need bass and the 2A3C-T supplies it nicely as well a very well extended, liquidy top end - maybe the purest tone of all tubes. Headstage has nice depth but is slightly narrow. This is tube sound with no apologies.

Sophia Princess Mesh Plate - Take the RCA monoplate midrange and add fine detail and extension! Headstage is relatively narrow but can be big when called for, such as with orchestral works, or go small, as with folksy or jazzy vocal. Vocals can sound spooky.

AVVT solid plate - Incredible balance, pure midrange and grand headstage. This is holy grail type stuff.

Sylvania/GE double flat plates - Gorgeous midrange sound that nicely complements the HD800's somewhat recessed midrange, IMO. You get the romantic sound of old stock tubes which adds flavor to the neutrality freak that is HD800 without spending a fortune (see any "NOS" monoplate on eBay).

EML solid plate - Solid low end and forgiving top end adds musicality to the HD800. The sound reaches about 80-90% of the AVVT solids.

As always, your miles may vary and opinions can change over time.

A large part of me wishes I had bought a Stratus, and an equally large part of my wallet is grateful that I haven't yet.

Nice summary drheadphone.

That's some excellent stuff.  Thank you!!

From the list, I gather you don't care for the Sophia's with the LCD3's.

Thank you again, sir!

The Sophias are good with the LCD3F. Just not much of an upgrade over stock, IMO. You get more lush midrange at the expense of slightly less low end. I don't like my LCD's prettified too much.

I hear that!!  I've never cared for the LCD's + Stratus but love them with my Dynahi.  I think a new set of tubes is in order

Just remember, that even if all of us had the same hearing and equipment (which we don't), we don't all like the same sound.  Even so, I do keep a close watch on what people write about what they hear through the Stratus and i am grateful for all the reports.

I'm still waiting for someone to buy, and report on, the AKG K812 with their Stratus!

Pretty sure I'll be able to comment on that at the latest after CanJam in March :)
