cheers - good stuff. Can the stratus be used with a pre-amp? There is is another good reason for taking pics - maybe some pics of the back. I would like to try my WA2 as a pre-amp with the stratus if possible when it comes. There might be a clash of tubes and it might not work at all but it could be worth a go.

If you have no luck here, i would PM Donald. I am far from being qualified to answer your question, but to my simple mind, the less things in the signal path the better. Just my 2 cents. I wonder if anyone has a different perspective.

Okay.  It made it...  Wow.  Pictures don't do thing justice.  It's an absolutely gorgeous amp.  I know some people don’t care for the blue, but it really is a luxurious colour.  It is darker than you might expect and not at all tacky.  Don’t let it deter you.  It really is a work of industrial art.

But enough talk, right?

Fresh out of the box!

It's going to be espresso and Pavarotti time!

With the stock tubes....

But not to worry, I have some upgrade that I will roll in.  Right now, I want to use the stock tubes and enjoy the amp as it is, so these will sit in the box for a little bit (IE about week).

And my new DAC that arrived last month.  I haven't really spent any time with it yet, so today is an EXTREMELY exciting day.  It's a level 4 gen 4.

And my cans.  The HD433's have never sounded so sweet.  I have to upgrade the stock cable though :basshead:

Okay, seriously...  But I am still hemming and hawing over which cable to get for the HD800's.

And just for fun, with my other favorite hobbie.

Thank you Donald for doing this!  Excellent idea!  Wonderful attention to detail.

In two years from modest ear buds to this:

(Speedball, Mundorf caps and an Alps Blue Velvet Pot made a world of difference on the amp.)

And finally to the Lampi + Stratus+HD800.  Holy cow.  I'm letting the Stratus and everything warm up, so I am just casually listening but my initial impressions are this setup will be with me for years to come.  I'm sure what else I could really ask for out of headphones.  That said, the Crack + HD600 is a helluva bargain.  It's not in the same game as my system now, no, but it is going to go to my office and my enjoyment of will be in no way diminished by my new system.  It really is an incredible value.

It's been an adventure and Head-Fi has been with me every step of the way.  There are a lot of really great people on these forms.  So, thank you for all the advice and guidance over the years (you all know who you are).

Anyway, happy listening!!

-Paul

I see no reason it couldn't be. Might have to play with the volume knobs a little if the WA2's pre outs are affected by its volume knob. Or just max out the Stratus and pretend it's just a regular old amp with no volume. But I absolutely agree with less in the signal path the better.

I've heard the combo of stratus and lampi L4 gen4 before with my previous th900 and lcd3. It sound really nice. Very open sound and rich tonality. Congrats, Paul :-)

good man paul - great pics. That Lampi looks amazing - im off to check the specs on it. Do take more lovely pictures whenever you decide to put the EML in. Enjoy you lucky devil!!

Hi Paul, congrats! Looking at your tubes just reminds me of mine. I just received the Princess Sophia 2A3 a few days ago. Initial impression of Princess Sophia + EML 5U4G is good, very engaging sound. I think it will suit well with your Lampizator. I will be mixing and matching my 2 sets of 2A3 (princess Sophia and natural sounds) with my 2 rectifiers (EML and U52) in the coming week to find the sound I prefer. So far, all 4 combinations sound great with my HD800.

I would be very interested to hear your impressions on the differences between those tube's also. Especially the differences between the 2A3's.

The HD800 sounds better than I have ever heard with the Stratus+Princess. Like, if I had known the HD800 could sound like this, I would have been WAY more motivated to find the right amp. I certainly have found it. The liquid flow, the voice definition, the coherent, seamless sound-world, and the detail resolution surpass what I heard from the SR-009 and the maxxed-out WES or the BH that I owned for a while this past summer, and are far beyond everything else.

Thanks bud! :beerchug:

p.s    -   i realize you didn't hear them side by side, but still preferred the HD800/DNA over the 009/BH which is god enough for me

You won't regret the purchase or the wait. Great amp!!

Thank you for your kind words everyone.

I should have some time on Saturday to sit down and really listen to music.  I am looking forward to it!

That said, last night just before bed I sat and spent about 20 minutes with the lights off, my feet up and glass a Laphroaig.  Maybe it was the whiskey, maybe it was the fact that the 2A3's glow a little blue, maybe it was the novelty of the new gear or maybe it's just that it's a really amazing combo, but I couldn't focus on the technicalities of the system.  I tried to listen for new details, or sound stage depth, but I just kept getting distracted by the music.  It's just so involving.

It really is a captivating system.  Is the best technically?  Unlikely.  Is it just fun to listen to?  Absolutely.  I'm extremely curious to try the new tubes!!

very nice shots Paul! I am really curious about the combo with the Lampi. I hope one day I have the opportunity to hear that it. Normally I would not be intrigued by a tube dac and tube amp combo but you and Frogger got me curious. Hope you can find some time to post more in depth impressions.

Psvane WR2A3s Good News/Bad News. Thought I would give everyone an update on my experience with Psvane WR2A3 tubes in my Stratus. Good news: In the Stratus, with LCD3 phones, they are the best tubes I have heard - open, smooth but extended top end, dynamic, toe tapping (I think that is what you all refer to as PRAT). To my ears, they make the EML mesh plates sound slow and soft. Bad news: I just reinstalled my EML mesh plates because the Psvane's (like every Psvane tube before) developed low level (non-volume dependent) ticking, sputtering, squelching once they burned in and were, of course, sounding REALLY good. I am so bummed.

I have now had this problem with 5 out of 7 Psvane 2A3s. I first tried their Treasure Mk II series. After awhile one started this same noise. I was sent a replacement and when it arrived, the other tube started acting up and then, within hours of listening, the replacement tube started the same thing. I returned them for refund and swore off Psvane tubes. Then I heard good reviews for the WR2A3s. Reluctantly I purchased a pair and within hours, the same issue. These were then returned and the replacement set I have been listening to for more than month started the same problem (one tube, not both).

At this point I am done with Psvane. I don't know what it is but the same exact problem has developed with the majority of the tubes I have purchased from them. I guess it is possible there is some strange mismatch between Psvane tubes and the Stratus amp but I now have the original Shuguangs, EML mesh plates, NOS RCA and Sylvania tubes and have never experienced this problem.

Again, I am really bummed. Those tubes are my all time favorite with my current set-up - by far. It's amazing to me that Psvane can make a tube that sounds that good but can't resolve this other issue that must have something to do with their manufacturing process.

I have heard the Shuguang Natural Sound tubes are a good match for the Stratus and want to give them a try in hopes of capturing some of the magic the WR2A3s had. Damn!
