DNA Stratus 2A3 amplifier - first impressions - Page 82

Donald has advised me that my amp chassis is being powder coated this week; now I'm really getting eager!!!

Soon I guess I'll be an official member of the DNA Stratus club!!!

Congrats! How long are the lead times now?
I'm not sure re current lead times; Donald can give you a much better idea. I believe my amp is the first of this latest batch--I committed this spring but Donald accurately advised me at that time that the production date for my amp would be around this time frame.

Thanks.

I hope to order one around april or maybe another amp that takes a while to actually get and I can't imagine waiting months :(  I'm too obsessive lol

wait times are like 3-4 months still right? :(

Yes, wait time for mine roughly 3 months. Arriving in December, can't wait!

also if someone ends up not liking it, i can always take it off your hands :D

still thinking of getting the stratus, just the tube rolling options seem limited to mostly 2A3, not much of the 5U4G variety and not much 6n1p to choose from (no 6922 tubes :(

I actually prefer the 6N1P / 6BQ7A and its variants to the 6922 sound.  Got the new "gold grade" one from PC and it is NICE.

Also there are MANY 5U4Gs to choose from, along with 274B, CV 575, U52, 5R4GY, 5Y3G, and 5Z3G/80/83 with adapter.

NOT TO MENTION, the many, many differences in sound between different 2A3s...

I have actually spent more time and money tube rolling on this amp than any other I have owned, including some very versatile two-channel amps.

Plus it plays nice with so many headphones - the possibilities are endless...

And just to touch on the DAC question - I have been breaking in John Kenny's new creation, the diminutive Ciunas DAC and it is truly superb - it's got to be THE dac under $1K.  Don't let it's limited functionality stop you - it sounds killer with the Stratus and my Sugden...

Soon I will also post impressions of the upgrade Donald made to the circuit - the addition of chokes and a new power transformer - which are now standard on current models - but which have brought my unit to a new level of brilliance - or should I say darkness, as in background, wow!

I did a bunch of A-Bing of two units - one with mod, one without - before I decided, and it's not a hard decision.  More shortly...

Even versus the very best of the 6dj8? Like CCa siemens and amperex pq whites?
Well the Cca is a special tube, of course.
I guess I could clarify by saying i prefer the 6N1P in the driver position.
I think a driver should be as clean and balanced as possible.
Leave the magic to the output. Cca as output or buffer = nice.

Also I edited my initial comments on Donald's upgrade to the Stratus. It comes with a new power transformer not new opts. More soon.

My first impression of the HD800 - a poor imitation of the AKG K701.  Bass is about the same.  Midrange is plastic.  Treble is even more plastic.  No sound stage.  They are balanced though and neutral.
