Here's what I've got: now, recommend a cable for my HD650's!

Hey gang,

Here's my setup for you: a soon-to-be-replaced Sony CDP-211 (to be replaced by, well... LOL...i dont know yet), Audioquest Copperhead IC's, a Perreaux SXH1 headphone amp, and the Sennheiser HD650's. I still have their stock cable. I want to get a replacement, for more than just the sound quality: I want my headphones to reach my bed, and the 10-footer that is stock just don't cut it.

I know that my Senns are a little on what someone could call the "warm side", and my Perreaux could be called that as well. Here's what I'm hoping: that the replacement cable I coudl get would open up the high end some more. I'm not expecting to make Grado's out of the Senns.. but I sure would like to hear cymbals, electronica, etc more "shiny" than I do now. I read that the Moon Audio Silver Dragon would maybe do that.. and of course, it seems like everyone who has HD650's also has the Zu Mobius. But I'm completely open to suggestions.

if you wish to open up the Senns, especially in the upper end of the spectrum, then the Zu's will do exactly that! with a warm amp and headphones, the Zu's compliment that type of combo perfectly.

I agree. I was looking to open up the highs and tighten up the bass with my 650's. The Zu cable is the cure. Not cheap, but worth every penny. For what your wanting to get out of the phones it is much better than the Cardas, or the Equinox.
It is a stiff cable though. But not unmanageable. If you do a search there is alot of info on the cables.

I have been reading a lot on Head-Fi about the various cables available. I think that I had already narrowed it down to the Mobius or the Silver Dragon--the reason I posted this message was because not everyone has the same setup, and I wanted to see if people's opinions had changed since they had written last.

On another note... I'm still not at all sure which cable would be for me. I have read Tuberoller's awesome review of the various cables available, and I have come to learn to trust his opinions--and he seems to really like the Silver Dragon.

PS... I checked again, and he didn't mention being naked at ALL in that review. Wow... what is this world coming to....

I've never heard them but by all accounts if you want to add high end then undoubtedly go for the Mobius or Silver Dragon.

The cardas is the one I'm familiar with. It does a great job. Headroom has tried out the other cables (esp the Zu) and found the cardas to be better or about the same on really nice equipment (they have class A amps from 8 different companies and a meridian 588.24 source and a nice turntable, $500 cardas interconnects, etc).

The cardas is my choice.

This is interesting. On what sort of music are you basing this on? Classical, I would guess? I don't (and will not, at least not for a long time) have "really nice equipment"..... And I will indefinitely be using digital sources instead of analog ones.

Would your recommendation still stand given this info?

The Cardas adds no where near the high end sparkle, or the deep bass to the 650 that the Zu cable does. The equinox is nice with the 650 also but from what you said you would like to hear out of your phones the Zu is better. From all the reviews the Zu seems to let the bass go deepest of all the aftermarket cables also. I've had the cardas, Zu, and equinox. All are better than the stock cables. IMO The Zu does more with the 650 than the other two. The money back offer is great with Zu.

By this money-back offer, do you mean Zu Cable's return policy? Or are you referring to something else?

You get 60 days or your money back if you don't like the cable. Also on most of their products, they are guarenteed for life. You might want to make sure this is also true on the 650 upgrade cable but I think it is. I know the 60 day money back offer is. I don't think there is any money back offer with the Silver Dragon.
The Zu cable and Hd650 are very, very, good together. If for some reason you don't like it get your money back.(minus shipping)

Do you think the Zu cable would significantly improve the sound with the source being an iPod with a TAH. I keep hearing a cable isn't worth the money if the source is an iPod.

Well, I can't speak with 100% accuracy since I don't have a TAH, but I do have the HD650's as well as an iPod. I also have the Perreaux, and have run my ipod through that amp with my 650's. It's really, frankly, not all that great. Don't get me wrong, its much better than unamped--I just don't find the 650's and an iPod a good match at all. I'd use my SR60's for that.

From what I understand, the Mobius (or the Silver dragon) will be more revealing than the stock Senn cable. Do you really want your mediocre source to sound, well, ****tier? All of the MP3 artifacting (assuming you are using less than, say, 256 VBR) will shine through those cables.

If you're planning on getting those cables, I'd say hook it up to a better source.
