Hey guys, i've read through the forum and found that maybe the Cowon x7 would fit the bill.  I wanted either the iPod Classic 160gb or the Cowon x7.  But I'm scared to go for the Cowon because of all the complaints I read.  Have they fixed any of these issues, or maybe a rockbox port for the Cowon?  I just wanted something around 160 gigs that sounded better than an iPod.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

IPod sounds brilliant, flat frequency response, and there is a rockbox port for the classic too

If you want something that can have a flat sound sig, go for the iPod. If you want a more colored sound sig, go for the cowon. I recommend iPod 5.5gen if you go for that.

the iMod iPod, Whipmod iPods with AMPs are better sounding than X7, Sony Z and X series walkmen are also great sounding DAPs(better sounding than iPods).

Well, I do have an old 5th gen iPod lying around, would money be better spent upgrading that? If so where would I have to go to buy a new hard drive for it?  (Its currently only 30gb).  And which mod would you say is more worth the money, Whipmod or iMod?

I recently upgraded a pair of ipod 5g/5.5g with the 120GB HDD's and couldn't be more happier about it. Now I have a total 240GB's to play my music in the FLAC fashion using rockbox.

The 120GB HDD I used is the Toshiba Mk1234gal. It has the same thickness of the 30GB HDD so you don't need to change the back plate. Search "Toshiba Mk1234gal" on eBay and you will find many of these HDD's for sale at good price.

If you can upgrade your iPod HDD nothing like it. But its kinda hard to do yourself, maybe there are shops that can do that.

Otherwise, you won't be able to find much in that capacity range other than iPod. The Cowon X7 is the only one around.

I would choose a 2GB Clip+ for $30 and put a cheap 32GB card in it. Hopefully at the end of August Sandisk will come out with a nice new version of the Fuze.

I never tried the clip+ but my Rockboxed ipod 5G blows my iPhone 4s out of water in terms of sound staging and 3D imaging. I can never go back to the iPhone 4s now.

Why not Clip Zip? I thought it was better than the Clip+ and better than my iPhone 4s.

Others seem to disagree with that.

It seems silly though to use a $600 iphone(they are so expensive without a contract-ie if someone breaks their iphone and isn't yet eligible for one with a new contract) to play music when a $30 Clip+ plays music quite well.Who want to put unnecessary wear and tear on an expensive phone that has a built in battery(all other decent phones have an easily replaceable battery). Many like to use Rockbox on a Clip+. I guess Rockbox isn't available for the iphone.  The Clip+ also has a micro SDHC card slot which the iphone lacks. It is nice to be able to put a 32GB card in a Clip+. Many who have an iphone have only an 8GB one. I can see an iphone being quite useful for some, however imo it seems silly to use it to play music.

I did not buy an iphone since it lacks a card slot, and I refuse to buy any portable electronics item over $100 with a built in battery. I actually hate buying all electronics with a built in battery, although buying a $30 item with a built in battery such as the 2GB Clip+ isn't so bad.

Agree. The price point is the biggest benefit of the Clip+/Zip. $40 (8GB + SDHC support) vs $130 (nano 8GB) is a big difference if you don't want the touch screen and other fancy stuff.
