I wore $14,000 headphones

... and they weren't turned on. D'OH!

I just got back from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this past week. What an incredible trade show -- absolutely HUGE!

From what I saw, Sennheiser was the only decent exhibit featuring headphones (and the only one featuring JUST headphones). They had an Orpheus on display, but unfortunately, they were exactly that ... only on display. The things weren't turned on, which really bummed me out. But it was still nice to see these cans in person and -- GASP! -- put them on. Pictures should be up on the Web shortly.

The booth did have a bunch of other phones that could be listened to, including an HD600 juiced by a HeadRoom Home amp. Was playing 'Dido' and sounded very good. This was my first time with a pair of Senn 600s. It wasn't the ideal listening environ, though, as these are open phones and there was much crowd noise. I think I still have my heart set on Sony's CD3000s.

Hi Newspaperguy
I have actually listened to them at a trade show, for about 30mins
[hogged em] lucky me hehehe.

But..Still team Stax

I might add I also like the way this demo set looked really well
used not abuse just lots of happy auditions by poor souls
who could never afford them Senn just torture the masses
and refuse to make something to compete with the topline Stax.

Shame

Wow. You're lucky that you actually got to hear the things.

A Senn rep told me that of the 500 Orpheus systems made, only three are left to buy.

Guess I'd better hurry.

Yeah, right.

Have you heard Stax?
You do not need14k for the electrostatic experience you know.

If not go and have a listen,

I head the Orpheus several years ago at a show and remember being pretty unimpressed. I know that's perhaps the sign of a good pair of headphones - something that sounds unimpressive at first, but I can think of a lot more things I would rather buy with that kind of cash.

I recently auditioned STAX Omega 2 and Cary 300SEI/Sony CD3000 combo.

Both sounded great. I think they would sound better after proper running-in.

Between the 2, I ended with the Cary/Sony combo.

Sound-wise, I (personally) prefer the latter. It has a very special powess that really brings the listener into the music. Listening experience was first-class.

Actually, it was a MAX, not a Home.

Although in that environment, it may as well have been an airhead....

Ooops! My mistake. Very nice unit. It was my first hands-on experience with one of these, too.
