[ REVIEW / COMPARISON ] Two Flagships Pass in the Night: Sony XBA-4 Review VS the MDR-EX1000 [Updated with 7550 and XBA-40!]

@a_recording : I was thinking of purchasing the EX1000 but after reading many reviews of them it seems that they might not be for me since i'm really sensitive to peaky upper mids/treble, even the e-q7 upper mids/highs I find harsh/piercing on most tracks. I've been recommended however that the 7550 might be a better solution for me since they have smoother highs. I'm trying to find something with thats airy with a concert hall/out of head soundstage with a live performance sort of feel and was wondering if the 7550 have that though. I listen to alot of J-POP/J-ROCK, female vocals and classical. How are they with those type of music?

The 7550 is indeed less les harsh / piercing than the EX1000 but by the same token it has less of an airy / out of head soundstage. If you find the EQ-7 harsh you may still even find the 7550 harsh,; I'm not sure. It's not that the 7550 has much smoother highs, it shares similar peaks as the EX1000 - just that the entire region is 3-5db softer. They can still sound a little raw some times with some tracks. I'm afraid I can't guarantee you won't find them harsh :frowning2:

Try Sony own BA drivers IEMs(XBA3, XBA4) and to me they are very smooth in upper mids, highs and not harsh at all or try RE272, they are realy sweet smooth sounding IEMs (like ADDIEMs and great for sensitive ears) with large space within the soundfeild and overall soundstage is big.

Impressions of Sony's BAs have been all over the place and if you read Rin's in-depth analysis of the XBA-3 and XBA-4 it becomes pretty clear why. Their sound characteristics change a lot with insertion depth and impedance, probably more so than any other IEMs I've heard. I have the XBA-3 and they sound a little darkish and lacking air from my lowest impedance sources, excellently balanced from my 5ohms Samsung R0 and almost aggressively bright from my 30ohms GS Voyager amp.

These are chameleons, and depending on preference, one might want more or less treble and aggression, but if you find your perfect combination of tips/insertion and impedance they can definitely sound very impressive.

I see. Does the 7550 have a bigger soundstage and sound airier than the eq-7? Also do they sound boring since they are used for monitoring purposes?

I can't directly compare the E-Q7 to the 7550. I only have a vague memory of the E-Q5 sound. I don't really think any monitoring headphones sound 'boring'; the 7550 is well rounded.

I am very sensitive to highs and actually went from the GR07/RE262 to the 7550 and am very happy.   Much smoother highs and humongous soundstage compared to those two.   I feel the music is surrounding me, but I'm not sure if it has that "dynamic live" feel you are searching for because it is soooo smooth.    It was also suggested to me to get the Aurisonic AS2 as a step up from the 7550, I haven't received it yet.   I have heard that Aurisonics does have some IEMs with that "out of head" live performance feel.   My suggestion is to pm Flysweep, as he is very familiar with the 7550 plus the latest "cutting edge" and new IEMs that would have characteristics you are looking for.

When I heard the AS2 I was struck at how THICK it sounded. It was certainly competent but it just felt cavernous and thick. It didn't entirely sound natural to me, but it was only a brief impression.

I have to say I just love the 7550 for long term wearing comfort and I use it for monitoring on videos.

Did you hear the AS2 prototype?   The AS2 hasn't come out yet.

It seems as if I've been bitten by the 'bug' and last night I've acquired a pair of MDR-EX700 (used, but not much and still boxed with all accessories) and it will be interesting to compare these with the EX-1000 (when I get a pair).

I originally had a pair of what appeared to be EX-700s but I think they were the fake versions that are/were floating around and just came in a black pouch with no accessories.  As I said before I am also interested in the XBA-4/40s as a pair to use for my commute and then the EXs whilst stationary at my desk so I'm pleased to have finally gotten a genuine pair of 700s.  :)

Only thing I'm missing is a 64GB Walkman (yes I meant Walkman and not MP3 player) as I'm now transferring all my CDs into FLAC but my new NWZ-F805 can only hold so many files before the 12GB is filled.  Does anyone have experience of how expensive it is to import one from Japan into the UK (either a z1070 or the F807) as I've only seen a few 32GB ones floating around online.

Regards

Oh boy. I had a hard time with the EX700's. A bit too raw in the highs for my tastes but I might feel better about them now. Hope you enjoy them, they are beautifully built and very comfortable!
