The 7550 is indeed less les harsh / piercing than the EX1000 but by the same token it has less of an airy / out of head soundstage. If you find the EQ-7 harsh you may still even find the 7550 harsh,; I'm not sure. It's not that the 7550 has much smoother highs, it shares similar peaks as the EX1000 - just that the entire region is 3-5db softer. They can still sound a little raw some times with some tracks. I'm afraid I can't guarantee you won't find them harsh

I can't directly compare the E-Q7 to the 7550. I only have a vague memory of the E-Q5 sound. I don't really think any monitoring headphones sound 'boring'; the 7550 is well rounded.

When I heard the AS2 I was struck at how THICK it sounded. It was certainly competent but it just felt cavernous and thick. It didn't entirely sound natural to me, but it was only a brief impression.
 
I have to say I just love the 7550 for long term wearing comfort and I use it for monitoring on videos.

It seems as if I've been bitten by the 'bug' and last night I've acquired a pair of MDR-EX700 (used, but not much and still boxed with all accessories) and it will be interesting to compare these with the EX-1000 (when I get a pair).
 
I originally had a pair of what appeared to be EX-700s but I think they were the fake versions that are/were floating around and just came in a black pouch with no accessories.  As I said before I am also interested in the XBA-4/40s as a pair to use for my commute and then the EXs whilst stationary at my desk so I'm pleased to have finally gotten a genuine pair of 700s.  
 
Only thing I'm missing is a 64GB Walkman (yes I meant Walkman and not MP3 player) as I'm now transferring all my CDs into FLAC but my new NWZ-F805 can only hold so many files before the 12GB is filled.  Does anyone have experience of how expensive it is to import one from Japan into the UK (either a z1070 or the F807) as I've only seen a few 32GB ones floating around online.
