Gerbil, I would upgrade the dac.  Grado is very sensitive to crappy source.  Also the 225s would be a lot better than the 80s with bass and dynamics.  If you go to another headphone the d2000 would be a good possibility.  I would avoid the AKG Q701 they just don't do ROCK all that well and require tons of amping.

I think the Yamaha Pro 500 could be great for progrock, in combination with a DAC /Amp from Teac, the UD-H01, this could bring firework to your ears:-)

No. Different driver and technology. The HE-500, 400 and HE-6 are all of the same 'family'. The HE-300 is not.
