Thanks for the update. I have been thinking of purchasing one. Do you know if anyone has compared it to a Valhalla?

Ah okay, so the actual DACs won't take a direct USB connection.

So is the dv336 gathering dust now that you have the BH Crack? Any comparisons?

I sold the DV 336. Its very good value amp but the BHC beats it in clarity. A friend who heard both side by side before I sold the DV336, said this of the BHC compared to DV336 (he is not an audiophile), "All the information comes through on this".

IMHO the DV336 had more bass impact than the BHC.

They will take a direct USB connection, however, with my DAC, the AES/EBU input provides a better sonic performance as compared to the usb input.  I would venture a guess that most (but certainly not all) DAC's have better performance through s/pdif or aes/ebu inputs.  The DAC manufacturers have not been as good at perfecting the usb input.  IMHO.

That is one of the reasons why you see so many manufacturers putting out usb-s/pdif converters.

If you guys are looking for a even warmer and more of a bass presence with impact and tactility, trying adding the Bottlehead Quickie w/ PJCCS to the chain. Only $135. I tried the combo with the T90 briefly before I sold it, and I remember it sounding warmer and not as trebly, but I had already moved to the HD800 by then. I can say the Quickie brings a lot to the table for the HD800. As far as sound signature is concerned, adding the Quickie will do far more than tube rolling the Crack. To me it did more than adding the Speedball to the Crack, which is supposed to affect  more than tube rolling. I think the Speedball improves technicalities, not really change the sound signature of the Crack though.

I have been curious about the s/pdif sounding better too. I would like to get a converter to test. I just need to find one that works well with my Gungnir.

That is what I am afraid of!  So far I just have the stock tubes.  However, I bought an RCA Cleartop and Amperex Bugle Boy and those should arrive next week.

Knowing myself and my OCD tendencies, I will also purchase a TS 5998, GEC 6AS7G or WE 421A.  I am weak.

For now though, I am enjoying the stock tubes.  :gs1000smile:

I have not not read much about the GEC 6080WA.  What can you tell me about the sonics of that tube?

On the 12AU7, I thought the Amperex Bugle Boy and RCA Clear Tops I bought would be good options (I have owned the BB's in different tube variants and liked them), but are there others I should be considering?

I did check out the 3 tube rolling links you posted earlier in this thread and those were extremely helpful.

And don't forget that you can get an adapter for the driver port so you can roll 6sn7 tubes as well! wink.gif

I am currently using Mullard Ecc82 , very smooth. Balances the sound with GEC 6AS7G, which has very good top end clarity. I have a GEC 6080WA coming in, it is supposed to be a middle ground between GEC 6AS7G & TS 5998, will post how it pairs with T90 & T1. Should have my T1 also by then.

Have you tried the TS 5998 + TS 6SN7 on the DV 336 ? I loved the combo on it.

I haven't yet. I have a TS 6SN7 but haven't tried it yet. I've been primarily using a TS 7326 & swapping between Raytheon and Sylvania. I've been saving the 5998 for a rainy day, don't know why tho. OC'd I guess. lol. I'll go give that combo a try now actually. smily_headphones1.gif
