Beyerdynamic T90 :D - Page 63

The T90s after a few weeks have worn off the 'wow - these are just great factor here"....

But honestly listening to these they still are a very nice and well executed design....they exude quality.

The sound experience they provide is really very, very good.

After LCD2's, Grados, AKG's I could be happy with these as the only cans I have etc.

The Objective 2 Amp and ODAC work wonderfully with these with all kinds of music.

How is the bass compared to DT 990? What about overall sound quality, is it a little better or a whole lot better than DT 990? T90 is 3 times the price of DT 990, is the price justified? Can I use T90 with iPod Touch without an amp? If an amp is needed, is Fiio E11 good enough? Thanks.

It has less bass than the DT990, imaging, soundstage and clarity is better IMO. I find them to be a complete upgrade to my dt880s and well worth the price. They're pretty sensative cans so they don't take a lot to get loud. I've tried running them from my Galaxy S3 and it got plenty loud. I find that a lot of Beyers are love/hate. You either love them or hate them. There's no "tolerate" because of their house sound so if you can try them out first, great. Just know that they're going to bright. If you're really interested, I would take a look at the for sale threads, Tman5293 is selling his pair for $475, he hasn't had it very long so the warranty is almost entirely intact. Bass is generally tighter with less bloom. It can be good to great depending on your amp/chain. Overall sound quality CAN be very good; again - depending on your chain. Higher impedance headphones (~ 250Ohm or more) often needs amplification to perform as intended. Care must also be taken to be sure the amp has the voltage swing and output impedance to match up well. You may get decent sound driven by an iPod Touch, but you'll not hear how these were intended to sound. Can't stress this enough. Good headphones are returned all the a time without the buyer hearing how they could sound if their chain was a better match. Are they 3 times better than the DT 990? Hard to say - they're definitely better - if your source/chain isn't the bottleneck.

You'll need a better source down the track, an ipod is really selling these short.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I guess I will have to go down to my local headphone shop and sample it, and if I do buy it I may have to get a good amplifier. I listen to my music either with the iPod or my laptop, I travel a lot that's why I need something I can carried along with me.

So I guess a DT 990 + Fiio E12 (850mW output) will sound better than just T90 on it's own?

Ohh they don't need that much power, they just need something better than an ipod or onboard sound.

a portable dac/amp to bypass your onboard sound would be ideal.

I finished building a Bottlehead Crack yesterday and paired with the T90, it is really something else. I've really been wowed. I find it not just better, but by a substantial amount compared to outut from the WA7 which is a $1000 amp. The only word I can describe it is visceral. It brings a completely new level of realism I've not heard before. And this is all without the speedball upgrade, which I will add on next week. It makes me wonder how much markup goes into labor, professional construction, and exterior build/looks.

Very glad to hear this, and not surprised. Crack's output impedance and output v swing should be an ideal match for the T90. My kits should ship next week :-)

I have gone thru a few tub amps, several SS amps and sold them all and have 2 O2 amps....but I am getting very curious about this crack bottlehead amp for the t90s...omg here we go again!

What is the output impeadance of this amp?

T90 owners, what headphones would you say are most similar to them? In what genres does the T90 excel/fail? Thanks.

Not sure about the output impedance, but they recommend you use 120 ohm or higher impedance headphones. I definitely recommend it. I honestly don't understand it myself, but the difference between listening through the Crack and my WA7 is a bigger difference than between plugged straight into my phone and the WA7. I liked the T90, but it was pretty standard for it's price range, but with the Crack it becomes a different set of headphones. More details and you can start to here the subtle nuances on each guitar strum or piano note. You can hear the body of the instrument. The treble decay goes to the next level. Even the bass which I mention was not as detailed as the HD700 becomes clearer and is in all honestly better delivered now than the HD700. I really started noticing the sub-bass on various orchestral pieces. The soundstage gets bigger too, but the imaging, which was already good, really gets a big boost.

Oddly enough, I don't notice such a big improvement going from WA7 to Crack for my HD700, if at all, so I really think it's a just a perfect pairing between the Crack and the T90. At this point I can confidently say the T90 utterly beats the HD700. People in the thread have mentioned the T90 being very picky on the amp, and I can see that now. It's a shame so many owners probably have never heard the true sound of these headphones.

I had gotten T90 and Crack to use as my work setup while I used WA7 and HD700 at home, but I don't think I can do that anymore as I love the T90 + Crack way too much. Also I just end up getting lost in the music and being able to focus on work lol.

I also have an O2+ODAC and it's got nothing on the Crack.

Recently I've been listening less music, and as I've begun upgrading smaller components like the tube upgrade to the WA7 or Aqvox low noise USB power adapter, the changes have been barely audible and minor. I've begun to think I've reached that 98% threshold where the next 2% would require thousands of dollars on just a single component alone, and a lot of it being snake oil. When I first got the T90, it had a different signature but not necessarily better than HD700. Pairing with the Crack has really opened my eyes. I've never really had a "wow" moment while I upgraded from M50 to HD598 to HD700, and O2 to WA7 even though each was a steady improvement. The Crack with the T90 was my first "wow" moment. It made me realize there is still so much out there, and that price isn't necessarily an accurate measure of sonic quality. It also put passion back into music for me. Today I ended up staying almost an hour later at work just to finish listening to an album, before I decided to take everything back home with me. I also found myself holding up on going to the bathroom til the end of the song, only to have another song I want to hear come on, starting the cycle anew. I even had times where a song I didn't want to listen to came on and before I could have it skip to the next one, something new in the song I haven't heard before comes up, so I end up finishing the song I didn't plan on listening to.

And this all without the speedball upgrade. I have it, but not assembled yet. Even though it's supposed to make it sound even better, I'm a bit scared it may ruin this synergy for me, and I'm a bit reluctant to add it lol.

I guess you get an idea about what I think about the T90 with the Crack lol. But hey, maybe the it's not simply that pairing being so special. Maybe my ears are just wired to like this pairing. We're all wired differently ourselves, so only way to find out if it'll make such an impression on you is to try it out yourself. :D

^

+ 1,000,000

This is as synergystic a set up as I have heard.

Have Crack with SB, film cap upgrades, Osram (GEC) 6AS7G brown round base and silver plate Siemens ECC82.  Heaven.

Sonido - SB will not spoil the pairing.  Go for it, man!

^^^ Love reading this - thanks! My Crack + SB ships next week. I have caps inbound, and a couple of nice tubes collected. I think I'll add some upgrades such as a stepped attenuator, silver wire, etc. The T90 with Torpedo is a very good match too, but I was hoping for more (don't we always :-) and it sounds like it's a real possibility.

Boy you guys arent helping here....the O2 and ODAC to me are superb, I hear all the fine subtle details, decay, reverb etc as you indicate with the Crack.

I too get lost in the music wind up listening to the whole song just because its so good etc...

Guess we will ask Santa for one of these to play with....
