T1 is the flagship. T90 is probably the actual replacement, hence the successor.

From what I overheard at the Beyer table at the Tokyo Headphone Fest, the T90 just slots between the T70 and T1.  Nothing apparently is going away.  I could be mistaken or have translated wrong, but that's the way I understood it.

Hasn't the Premium DT770 been discontinued and T70 taken place of it? Other than the remaining DT770s, I mean...

The DT770 does seem to have gone away.  But the T70 is a bit out of that price range and has the Tesla driver which would categorically put it above of the 880 and 990.  The prices on their website somewhat show the pecking order:

 

T1   €950.00
T5p  €950.00
T90  €499.00
T70  €449.00
DT990  €299.00
DT880  €299.00
Although if you go by that, the T90 would seem a bit more like a lateral (kind of like the 880/990 relationship) than an actual step above.  They really need to fill that gap between $500 and $1k.

Just as the DT770 has been phased out, who's to say the 880 won't be phased out when the T90 is in full swing? Again, going by the description, the T90 seems like a DT880 replacement, not DT990. You can find T70's just a bit over the DT770's price range at times, and I doubt the T90 will be any different.

Pricing has nothing to do with it, as the T70 has pretty much replaced the DT770 by the looks of it.

Again, just speculations, though the Premium DT770 seems to be all but gone now. Considering the seven year run of the mid-fi Beyers, it wouldn't surprise me that they are getting slowly phased out for the mid-fi Tesla line.

Well that's just your own conclusion. Nothing said on the product page can be inferred to it w/o any doubt.

That sounds NOTHING like the DT990, and that description is DEFINITELY more what we expect from a DT880 successor. You must be joking. Going off the one person who has heard it and say it's not very strong in bass as well as the analytical description... well, early signs show that it isn't a successor to the DT990 whatsoever.

If that's the case, you'd almost wonder why they didn't fill in the T80 spot. Good way to confuse people.

 

Unless, they didn't want to make a successor to the DT990, which is definitely understandable. But that still doesn't explain the model name.

The only thing that I can see why they chose 9 instead of 8 is that they are marketing it as a FULLY OPEN headphone, while the DT880 was marketed as semi-open, which we all know is bull. The design of the outer cup also is very similar to the DT880.

Nothing wrong with a DT990 having a succcessor. All that needs to be done different is less treble, which will automatically bring out more mids. The emphasized bass was perfect on the Premiums. The Pros... they destroyed my ears with bass.
