Just had a little (1 hour) T90 comparison with long time awaited HD650!
Yes, I know its very short time, but this is my initial impression!

At first I listened HD650 for about 10 minutes, and switched to T90 to see the differences.
Lol, I was WOW'ed! Where are all the details? Who turned out the light? Just darkness.

Somehow, I didnt liked them at all!

Maybe the fact matters what i have T90 for about a year?

More stuff:
*Soundstage on HD650 felt much narrower! Even on first try I noticed it. T90 has a bit less depth, but much wider and spacious room.
*Treble - like if the T90 has 10 treble notes, HD650 has only 1-2! Music sounded too dark for me, not engaging at all.
*Also, I thought that HD650 wont have that high/loud treble, but no - it has it. Its just not as detailed and in the same resolution as T90 at all.
*Also, I thought that T90 somehow has weaker bass, but when I switched from HD650 to T90 - I noticed that its about similar levels as HD650. Maybe T90 bass hides under exaggerated treble?
*Also, I felt no separate bass texture/notes on HD650 as I remember.

Later, I tried to spend more time with HD650 and then switch again to T90 - HD650 looked like fat sounding thing and T90 way thinner! From time to time I was (and I am) thinking that T90 could have a bit more meat...but nothing near HD650 levels. Maybe I could use to it, and adapt. But for me, I think T90 offered more. I'm happy again, lol.

I tried both on Aune T1 MK2 (Golden Lion tube) and Colorfly Pocket HiFi C4!
And I think
Colorfly Pocket HiFi C4 smokes out my Aune rig - everything sounded soo smooth!

I very much agree with your impressions. In comparison with the DT90, the HD650 is veiled, dark and slow. Even in comparison with most other Classic Beyers, is a boring sounding Headphone. In my not so humble opinion, it ranks as one of the most massively overrated designs in the History of Headphone development. Not to mention ridiculously over- priced!

I'd say it's a really good thing the HD-650 exists. Some people like (/love) dark and slow and would never think of it as boring. Dry bass and thinner sound can also feels boring, not counting ear-bleeding sibilance for some others.

It's also 250 to 300 € here, where as T90 goes up to 450 to 500 €. I would expect (and expected) quite a bit more for the pricing difference. The HD-700 is more on par as it is priced the same.

Maybe it's a bit overpriced, although I have yet to hear something significantly better at the same price range.

I'd be curious to hear the DT880. Just afraid I might not like it, I hated the 990 :D

I also wonder how the 400i would compare to the T90, seems like a new natural competitor.

I had the T90's and compared them to the HD650's. The HD650's can be improved with a 3rd party cable. The T90 are just too bright for me. Someone here on the board recommended the HiFiMan HD-400 after I reviewed the T90's and I won't look back. They are my cup of tea. I removed the earcup liner and wow what a nice headphone.

The T90 sound could be improved a lot with a very good amplifier and DAC. Do not be surprised that the T90 headphones can surpass many planar magnetic headphones because when paired with the right gear, it could be very rich sounding. The bass could also be improved on with a good amplifier. Try to spend at least 4 times the price on gears and the T90 sound will really come to life.

Not that I don't want to believe cause I'm sure you feel that way, but I'm not sure it would be the case for most people.

A lot of reviews try out headphones with really good gear (Chord Hugo and the like), yet you won't hear much of the T90 when it comes to comparing high-end headphones.

The T1 for sure, against HD-800, HE-560, LCD2... but then it also cost twice the price of a T90 here.

As long as you didn't try the TOTL and have 2k to spent just on gear, I'd say it would be a much better idea to spend 250 to 500 $/€ less on amp/dac and try out the big guys instead.

I have actually spend more than 2k on gears itself just to improve the sound quality of the T90 and it really works. My T90 headphones now sound like i am in a room surrounded by speakers. It may not be worth to spend so much on a T90 though.

Yes, like I said, I do believe you (nice setup by the way), but I'm still thinking trying TOTL with lesser gear before would be a good idea. Listening to an HD-800 with a Gustard H10, just an example amongst others, before going all-blaze with a T90. People might find out what they want for a cheaper price.

Of course I'm not counting you, I'm glad you found your heaven with your current gear :-)

Yeah, it's not. When you're committing 2K into your chain, another 300 or so to get a T1 is a drop in the pond.

:/ I agree the T90 makes the HD650 look bad from a technical perspective, but the 650 is still pretty awesome, and I'd take a well-driven HD650 over any beyer below the T90 any day. I have the DT770, have a friend who has the DT880s, and have heard DT990s multiple times...I'd say the DT880s are close to HD650 from a technical perspective, but nowhere near as realistic sounding in terms of spacial reproduction. The T90s are a step up, but even they don't sound as "lifelike" at times; the 650 is a really solid phone that scales up very well with top-notch sources.

You can save hundreds on the BCL by getting the matrix or lovely cube which are BCL clones. There is also an A1 clone which will save you loads over the real A1. If you go the tube route, sometimes the Crack + speedball is on promotion for $300 and they say this makes the T90 close to the T1. Point is, you don't need to spend 2K.

Lehmann audio amplifier is make in germany and the build and sound quality is definitely better than the lovely cube. On head fi, many has point out the difference in sound quality between black cube linear and lovely cube. Furthermore with Denon advanced AL32 technology, the sound quality is further improved once again. Now the T90 headphones really feel like you are seating in quiet room surrounded by all kinds instruments all around you. Although the T90 headphone may not be the top of the line model from beyerdynamic, its sound quality is much better than a hd800 or T1 on a lousy setup.

Might depends on how lousy, the T90 on a $200 rig sounds really awful to me, but maybe the HD800 or T1 would actually do even worse. :D

Some chinese amps seems to have a decent quality, the Gustard H10 may do well with the T90. It appears to be a very nice match with the HD800.
