Violin Recommendations

So new to classical music, picked up AIR: the Bach Album performed by Anne Akiko Meyers on a whim, and find I can't put this CD down..  smily_headphones1.gif

Anyway, was hoping someone out there had some recommendations for me along the same lines.  I really liked the energy in BWV 1041, 1042, and 1043.  And BMW 1068 was just very musical to me.  Here's the track list for reference:

1.  Air from Orchestral Suite 3 in D major BWV 1068

2.  Violin Concerto 1 in A minor BWV 1041

3.  Violin Concerto 2 in E major BWV 1042

4.  Largo from Concerto for Harpischord in F minow BWV 1056

5.  Concerto for 2 Violins, Strings and Continuo in D minor BWV 1043

Thanks !

I really enjoy Julia Fischer - she has covered Bach, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky...just to mention a few.

If you enjoy the sound of violin yet want something slightly different, try Lindsey Stirling. Check out her youtube videos!

Have to agree with this. Actually, I saw your recommendation, tdunks, on the other thread which name escapes me right now. I watched a video that was posted, and was pretty taken by it. I was surprised. Great stuff.

Interesting change.  Do like her playing and energy, but the dancing is somewhat oddball and distracting for me.  Guess this doesn't matter if we're only listening.  Also, can't seem to find any CDs or digital downloads for her, just Youtube vids?

Lol. Yeah, I agree with that. When I first saw the video I was like, what....Lol. But nonetheless good music IMO.

Thanks !  Actually already picked that up a few days ago, have the Bach violin concertos by Anne Akiko Meyers, Hilary Hahn, and Julia Fischer to compare against now.  Any suggestions on which piece or composer to try next?  Find myself drawn more into the first and third movements where it's fast, less so in the second.  Also liked Tchaikovsky's violin concerto if that helps.

If you like Hahn's playing, I recommend these recordings:

Higdon & Tchaikovsky Violin Concertos
Ives: Four Sonatas;
Schoenberg & Sibelius Violin Concertos
Barber, Meyer: Violin Concertos

yeah, I'm a fan.

But also try Anne- Sophie Mutter's, Bach: Violin Concertos & Gubaidulina: In Tempus Praesens and she does a good Mendelssohn Violin Conerto too.

Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass

I can hardly describe how much I love this record.

Agreed, this recording did a lot to reconcile me to Glass, whose work a friend described as "egg beater" music. I've got a recording of Brooklyn Rider doing the quartets and other Glass material, but Kronos is better, imo.
