Very nice to put it mildly. The only combo Dac/Headphone amp I like better is the April Music Eximus DP-1. I have been living with an HP-A8 on my desk for about 4 months or so. I have had no desire to change it out. It sort of reminds me of a Mcintosh piece. If the display on had a blue hue you would never know the difference:) It is a very sound flexible piece like the TH900. I have not found that it is skewed towards one music genre over another. It is very linear sounding. More neutral than anything else. I have no complaints other than the manual does not go over all the functionality of the menu system. A new firmware was just released and I am waiting to hear back from Fostex on all the changes. Very interesting that they incorporated a digital output that you can then use the pieces as a USB to SPDIF converter to then send on to your high end 2 channel dac for a speaker set up or something along those lines. I have not played around with the SD card slot that much but you can load it with DSF DSD files not to be confused with DFF files. I was waiting for the new firmware to be able to do this over USB as I am to busy or lazy to deal with making SD cards:) I do have one card I have used to test functionality and it sounds fantastic. I also use the piece with powered speakers on my desktop. Thus using it also as a Preamp. First rate in that functionality as well. All in all a great product. Really no negatives I have been able to find yet. On a side note the unit is almost dead quite with my JH 16Pro Truphase. I have to turn it way over normal listening levels to hear back ground hiss. Just an FYI for those of you who like to use IEMs with headamps.
