Finally, I laid my hands on these babies. From my 10 min initial impression, I must say I love it with heart and soul : ) Thick, warm vintage mode to serve brighter phones and crystal clear DX100-sounding HD mode to serve some other warmer cans, really versatile and thoughtful on this. I could eventually listen to my JH16 without asking for more in the mid-range frequencies : ) These are definitely more musical and thicker sounding than the DX100. Resolution, sound-stage wise need further in-depth comparison. GJ Hifiman.

Have you tried your JH16s with an HM801 and if so how does that compare with the HM901/JH16 combo?  Thanks.

I have tried the old JH16 before with both 801 and 901. 801+ GAME is still the best surgery I have ever heard to date. The sound signature of 801+GAME just complement almost everything JH16 lacks. 901 is also a super combo since it remained some of the 801 characters, but it sometimes can be a bit too powerful if you are using the wrong amp card which can bloat the sound a bit.

Thanks Tupac.  Your input is very helpful, as always.  I got my JH16s about a year ago (are they the old ones?) and do have the HM801 with all the amp cards including the GAME one.  I am satisfied with the sound overall but am wondering if upgrading to the HM901 is worth the money and effort.  From your reply it sounds like it's not.

A year ago will be the old ones. For me? I don't think it's worth it if you buy a full priced one. I just haven't heard of a better surgery than 801+game card.  901 IMO is more powerful than 801, so you will feel exhausted when you listen to it a lot. I can't speak about 901+IEM card since it's not out yet. But with standard card or balanced one, I do think 801+ game surpass them with OLD jh16. Although technically, it might not be on par with dx100 or 901, but the smoothness and the vocal are just hard to resist. It's even better than my desktop setup.

Can't remember where I heard it, but I have heard of that GAME card is tuned with a pair of JH13.

I think one of the strengths of the 801 is the warm, full mids. With the high output impedance in the GAME card (32 Ohms) it will reduce some of the excess bass in the (old) JH16 I expect. Both these points could explain why 801 w/ GAME amp  pairs well with JH16. Just my two cents ...

Exactly. also combining with rolled off treble reduce the sibilance and bring out the upper mids (Vocal), making JH16 a lot flatter. And GAME also brings out lots of micro details of JH16 with cleaner presentation that balanced or standard amps failed to do so. The only down side for this surgery will be the upper treble, but it's not a problem with the DAP, it's a problem of JH16 itself.

Thank you gentlemen.  I think I'll stick with my 801/JH16 for a while longer.  Off topic, but I haven't been following the JH16 development and was not aware of "'new" JH16s.  Is this just a newer batch that turned out to have a different sound signature?

The new JH16 is the freqphase version of old JH16, which utilize the technology developed by JH over the course of the last few years to solve the phase cancellation problem faced by all the multi-crossover multi-driver IEMs.

The result is, clearer sound, better depth and separation.

Sound signature wise, I have heard from people own both: no. But it has better overall performance due to its new freqphase which doesn't cancel any frequencies allowing all the mid, low and high drivers' sound reaching your eardrum at the same time.

So that way, you will get more detail, better coherence, better imaging so on.
