In fact let me expand that question to all the boards except the balanced amp module which I already have but no experience with the other boards. Do any of the boards have a noticeable noise floor?

I feel the new discrete has among the lowest noise floor of all the cards along with the IEM card.

The original classic amp board I had is pretty bad, the worst of the bunch.  The Angel (3rd party made) is also just average.  The balance/minibox/old ad8397 stock/older discrete all has similar level that is slightly more noticeable than the IEM/new discrete but still better than the Angel.

These are impression of the cards I own, and I'm not sure if there are unit variation etc....

Hi guys, I just purchased the HM-901. Sounds amazing, but i'm wondering if my unit has some sort of defect with the scroll wheel. When I scroll, the menu doesn't seem to register the scrolling appropriately. Example, I scroll the wheel 3 times but the menu selection only moves once or twice instead of 3? Its as though the device misses out on scroll clicks if that makes sense. Is this normal or should I send it back for a replacement? Thanks!

They want $499 for the dock apparently, sounds absurd. I wont't be getting one, would rather put that cash towards a real desktop deck like a Gungnir, which I did.

My current setups are:

Home: Computer>Wyrd>USBGungnir>Mjolnir>HE560

Porotable: HM901>Balanced Card> He600 Songbirds

cant se myself upgrading anytime soon

WHAT!? $499? That would be indeed insane. I was thinking ~$200 bucks.

HI everybody!

I am in the California, US and did a A/B (out of fostex th900) with the ak240 vs hm901+iem card it took 30 seconds to setup the hm901 it won in 35 second into the comparison on sound.  Needless to say it peaked my interest, all these cards you guys are talking about can you get them in the US?

Second question any word on the sequal to the hm901? I basically want the 901 with dsd, better hardware, more inbuilt memory, UI that rivals AKs, and better batter life.

guess thats true I want to invest in something like a geek wave (despite the horrible marketing shows promise) or ak120II (definition of sleek and futuristic astell&kern has earned the title of the Apple of portable hifi, but they still have much to learn in regards of sound). but the hm901 hits all the right note dual es9018, analog volume controll,  updatability of sound, flexibility of hardware.  Still they aren't perfect and I am aware of that but they are closing in of mobile perfection.

any words on my first question?

u can find most of the cards on head-direct.com except for discrete and angel cards. Those two cards are DIY limited edition cards allocated for members of an ancient secret society and they are your pathways to audio nirvana

For dsd, AK240, Cowon P1, Calyx M, QLS QA360 and Lotoo Paw Gold support native DSD (AK120II does not). QA360 would be a good value DSD DAP if it wasnt so hard to buy one now...

is this the no homers club because it's one thing to not let me join its another thing to rub it in my face.

Yeah I guess I should have been more specific I wanted to know if there is US availability of the Chinese 3rd party amp cards.

Dsd is important to me but I don't mind if the player does internal conversion to pcm as I have very little dsd I just don't want to duplicate it.  If all my other request come true I am willing to let that one go.

Haven't heard any chatter on successor model for hm901 and hifiman isn't known for rapid model replacement anyway. Also, if you are hoping for a material jump in UI/aesthetics/build quality you need to adjust your expectation as we haven't seen massive improvement in these areas from hifiman.

Sound quality is and will be their key draws. You aren't missing much in these DIY cards. Between the classic, iem/balanced, minibox cards you have all of your basis covered re warmish, neutralish, or aggressive signature. The DIY cards aren't technically "better" as in transparency, soundstage, power, etc but just offer more different voicing/tuning that or may not work for anyone. Just my 2c.
