HM-901 - Page 194

Well my HM901 saga just keeps going...

I'd decided in the end to keep the third unit I was sent, but this morning one of the channels got weaker and dropped out.  I picked it up to check the jack was in properly (it was) and it came back.  Found that light pressure near the logo on the unit makes the channel drop out sometimes and it makes a plastic creaking sound.  Reseated amp card, unable to replicate problem then 10 minutes later the channel dropped briefly again.  At a guess it's probably bad solder on the amp card slot, I'm not going to check though, not my problem...

Unit 2 hadn't been sent back yet, the one with the off-centre jog button.  I'll keep that one and send it back to the manufacturer if the button ever stops responding properly.  At least I've actually had 5 or 6 hours of use on that one and it all functions properly.

The build quality on these really is shockingly poor, this should be #1 priority for their next model, they've already nailed the sound.  I can tolerate buggy or slow UIs, I can cope with so-so controls, I'm fine with something being larger than alternatives or being a bit hungry on power.  I can't abide low build standards.

So since I'm keeping one, does anyone know of somewhere that sells protective cases for them?

So better than balanced or not? So far balanced card is my reference even in SE mode. But I only compared to iem which I did not like as much.

In general yes, but since I'm using it in my pants pocket most of the time, it won't get ventilation anyway and putting more layers between the ak240 and skin is more important.... :p

Good point. Haha.

Ugh. Dammit. I really want one of these third party cards. Any idea what is different on the fenli cards? Which Op-amps used etc?

Looking at the caps alone, they don't look at all like they would produce a similar sound at all. Not intending to try the ELfidelity card?

Tao bao has leather cases for them with holes cut out for the vents and buttons. I purchase a couple for Kiat and myself awhile ago. They are not hard cases though. Like I said, leather.

Your luck with 901s is really horrid by the way. I find the build quality pretty solid especially in the later reiterations. Good luck getting a proper one. At least their customer service is top notch.

To me the discrete amp ( Fen Li) card sounds better than the balanced card even in balanced mode. It has more power and better extensions in high/low frequency, the sound is more dynamic IMO. In comparison, the sound from balanced card is a bit dryer and duller. It drives the HE560 (with balanced cables) better than the balanced amp card in balanced mode too.

The discrete amp card consumes more battery too, my 901 can only last about 4-5 hours w this card, the headphones I usually use are RS1 and ED8.

These are all my personal experiences and feelings. But I think some other discrete amp card users feel the same too (there is a QQ chitchat group dedicated to this amp card, the moderator is the discrete amp card maker).

So you guys are saying that if I use the Fenli card then use my balance cable(TRRS) no problem? It wont burnt my IEM?

next is where to get this Fenli card? Someone in China can take our orders?:)

Had a chance to copy some more music on and do some proper listening today, discovering parts of music which I'd never heard before despite owning for years, this was definitely the right choice of player and it's forgiving enough with the classic card to listen to some of my worse recordings with the mode set to Vintage.  The AK240 had been absolutely brutal with those.  I'll probably try the balanced card at some point but at the moment I'm happy enough with the classic/stock.

I really love this hobby especially like if i need to get the best sound out of hm-901, i should get the obscure discrete card produced in a limited quantity and sold in China. In order yo get the best sound out of Hugo, one shpuld purchase AP1/PP to get the best coaxial output into the dac. For AK240, i need to send it in for mod.

Everywhere i look, more money is needed LoL
End rant

Lol won't disagree with the money aspect wink.gif

But for the 901 cards, I still think they are different sig more so than better or worse. On any given day I can prefer classic card then in the afternoon I may like the balanced and at end of the day I swapped for the minibox.... I think with the exception of the original stock AD8394 card, the rest are really more preferences than absolute. (The ad8394 also has it's value - long battery life)
