HM-901 - Page 188

901 in general is warmer, more musical/euphoric, and have fuller sound.  Amongst the amp boards you can pick the warmest/tubey type sound with the Classic card, or a more reference, wide staging, and powerful Balacned board.  Or you can choice Minibox which is a bit more euphoric than balanced, but less syrupsy than the Classic.  Comparatively AK240 is more neutral, analytical, and have a less full sound overall, a few users wanted a more full sound and end up sending it to RedWineAudio for their mod service and try to make it sounding closer to the hm901.  Between Ak240 and HM901, which one is "better" can be very subjective.  For me, it is the 901.

But trust me, looks/weight/UI are all factors that affect how you use it daily....

You're making me think I really must get an A/B comparison with them somehow.  So difficult...  Perhaps I should buy the 901 from Amazon and take it to the place I can demo AK240 at again, then send the 901 back if I prefer the 240.  It seems so dishonest doing things like that although it's allowed under UK distance selling.

Honestly though the looks/weight/UI are irrelevant to me though.  I listen on the train or at work, which means I always have my backpack nearby.  I'm too old to care what people think of how my portable gadgets look ;)  As for UI if I can navigate a tree of folders and hit play, I'm happy.  While the AK240 is undoubtedly a nicer design the HM901 looks fine, it's not bright red or covered with flashing LEDs.  I do care about reliability though, I tend to buy one thing and run it into the ground rather than constantly upgrading.

Long shot - is there anyone in the Cambridge UK area who has a 901 I could audition?  I have a car, anywhere I could easily drive to on an afternoon would work.

One thing about buying one off amazon and auditioning: I don't know if it's brain burn in or what, but for the first hundred hours of play time the 901 shifted pretty dramatically - I remember hating it at first, thinking it sounded no better than my iPod, but it's really filled out and the details are starting to appear. I'd recommend letting it run for a few days (or at nighttime while you're asleep) to run out that bias.

Best!

You to add my 2 cents, I think exactly like kkcc, and I own both, and have owned or tested most others. 240 sounds very good, but 901 sounds clearly better to me. And I do not find the ergonomics advantage of the 240 is that huge.

Is there any conversation at all of HiFiMan upgrading or updating the 901 from its 1960s/1970s look to even maybe a 1980s look. It seems like they got everything right except looks which is killing my shallow side. Maybe we can find someone to offer a case mod to remove the electronics and put them into something eye pleasing. Could you imagine an AK100 look with 901 SQ and swappable amp boards?

Unfortunately it's the reverse.... Hifiman must have been real proud of this design, or they overpaid vastly for injection molds and need to produce more unit in this casing to average out the cost per unit - they are churning out MORE models with this casing in hm802 and now hm650....

Oh well, then they should probably market the design as a very strong theft deterrent "feature" as nobody would ever want to steal one seeing it out in public spaces. HiFiMAN could charge extra for that - oh crap, they already are - its an undocumented feature.

Well, unless Fang is willing to license their premium 901 SQ design to AK, I guess that leaves me/us looking for an exceptional "ex-apple" design expert to offer an exciting minimalist case mod. Any volunteers?

Since you are in UK, you can consider getting an ipod touch + Chord Hugo rig. SQ tops HM-901 for real.

Personally I don't like dealing w two boxes w some cables in between, especially considering the not so robust looking/feel connectors on the Hugo. I guess it's a compromise of sound quality and portability. To me I just don't feel AK240 worth its price SQwise, and I'm used to the UI of 901 already. It's been pretty stable and trouble free in the past a few months. BTW, I use 901 at home only, like to bring the music w me here and there when watching over the kids.

Oh wait for Lotoo PW Gold...i hope they will send review units to Currawong, AnakChan, ClieOS etc...
Hopefully, Hong Kong shops will get demo units too

Not sure we will see that as I have read before hifiman is claiming the Lotoo PAW gold infringed on hifiman IP and is copying one of the early internal hm901 prototype that didn't make the cut to later design stages. I was like "wtf there are people who want to copy a 901!?" when I first read that LOL...... But then knowing how poorly IP protection is in China, maybe nothing can be done by hifiman even if what they claim is true....

Too bad....but nothing money cannot solve in China

The poor souls probably bought the design from someone who told them its the next ipod... LOL

Speaking of how design sells, all audiophile DAPs are a bit funky looking AK included....

I am also starting to listen to HM-901 at home with 1p2 + uber...its the only time I feel good even while not listening to HD800 at home regardless of the current hot weather....

You and Mimoullie just have too much mpney to spend and keep on buying stuff LoL

Rudi was raving about A&K > ALPHA-VALVOLA tube pre amp > Epsilon S

http://www.head-fi.org/t/649717/portable-headphone-amplifier-wagnus-bialbero-epsilon-s-impression-and-appreciation-thread/465

That ain't even transportable but they could be fed by the line out of HM-901 / PAW GOLD for even better SQ?

59,800 yen for Alpha Valvora and 102,600 yen for Epsilon S. Most likely ultra pricey mini-to-mini IC (DIY Crystal Cable Dreamline) should make a difference and that's probably how we might beat the iPod Touch + Hugo combo thanks to such steroid, LOL

BTW, I wish that DOCK-1 could provide balanced outputs via XLR but they could find the room for SE outputs with smaller RCA connectors.

HM-650 with DOCK-1 could be an affordable source for Hugo since we won't need HM-802 or HM-901 for Toslink output, but that simple remote control didn't seem to have a display and we've gotta sit pretty close in order see the relatively small screen.

Hopefully playing DoP FLAC via Toslink output won't be a problem since George was getting occasional dropouts with the bundled coaxial cable.

Agree with kkcc and Mimouille: the 901 edges it insofar as pure SQ is concerned. The only question is whether you find one more convenient to use on the go than the other. biggrin.gif

this setup looks really bad ass... loves to try it one day..

just a thought.. if this Wagnus amp is not Japanese made, we would probably saying how ugly it looks already... LoL

What is that? Nothing obvious popped up in Google.
