Because it is still probably the best portable source out there? ;P. Actually I have been wanting to get one back long time ago. Had to wait until I heard other sources that recently come out:)

With no dial either! Let's hope the up-down/left-right scroll button have a quicker response than the FF/RW/Play

The actual product isn't really as white as the above photos show, it's more silver than white.

The 4-way buttons are very responsive when I tried it at the product launch event. The player sound really nice, very similar to the 802 which I had briefly. Actually I prefer the 4-way buttons over the wheel on the 901/802.

Those are priced just a bit too much to take a leap of faith... But would be interested to have a demo or read reviews from credible headfiers to see how they sound differently than existing ones....

Does anyone here have a lot of listening time with HM-901 and the AK240?

I'm trying to pick my next device, have been unable to find a 901 to audition, tried an AK240 and was very impressed but it was a bit harsh with some music in the upper range.  Can you use the AK240 EQ settings to emulate 901 Vintage?  Has anyone tried the 901 with TH900 or LCD-XC headphones?

is the 901 pocketable? That is really a big deal breaker for me whether it is or not

I have both and no I can't really get my ak240 to sound like the 901 /w any of the amp cards. Don't have the th900 or lcd-xc but 901 with any of the amp boards does pair very well with my LCD3, imo better than with my ak240 balanced.

It is pocketable. To me, pocketability has more to do with thickness than size. On day to day usage, I find ak100/120 and zx1 feels actually smaller in my pocket, while dx50/90, x3/5, and ak240 feels pretty much the same as the 901.

Which do you prefer of the two DAPs?  I liked how the AK240 put the sound all around me.  It may have just been due to the mixture of testing and volumes but as I drove back from the place I had a demo at, my ears felt a little tired.

I like them both and hence I'm keeping both. As a DAP, the AK240 is much more complete 're UI and features (track searching, wifi streaming, EQ, optical out are some features I often use). The AK240 also won't draw curious nor condescending stares from bystanders on trains or Starbucks like the hm901 would.

But from a sound perspective I still prefer hm901 over ak240, and the hm901 is much more flexible with modular amp board giving me different sound AND different power output to pair with different phones.

Reasons?

I don't really care how it looks, weight, how the UI works etc - I just want something I can enjoy listening to without needing an extra amp block.

does the es9018x2 really matter in a dap though? isnt that for 8 channels or something? Why not use the 9018mk2x2?

Both sound very good, and are best among all current high end DAPs and pairing them with amps yields no or very little benefits.

901 in general is warmer, more musical/euphoric, and have fuller sound.  Amongst the amp boards you can pick the warmest/tubey type sound with the Classic card, or a more reference, wide staging, and powerful Balacned board.  Or you can choice Minibox which is a bit more euphoric than balanced, but less syrupsy than the Classic.  Comparatively AK240 is more neutral, analytical, and have a less full sound overall, a few users wanted a more full sound and end up sending it to RedWineAudio for their mod service and try to make it sounding closer to the hm901.  Between Ak240 and HM901, which one is "better" can be very subjective.  For me, it is the 901.

But trust me, looks/weight/UI are all factors that affect how you use it daily....

Not sure about technical benefits or how much the 901 sound I like is due to the dual 9018, but I do like it's sound a lot more than my dx90 who uses 9018k2m x 2.  Guess this is moot and we won't really know unless there is a 901.1 with dual 9018k2m, or a dx90.1 with dual 9018.  I'll leave it to the manfacturer to figure out how they wanna build their DAPs and I'll just listen for myself what works and what doesn't.
