HM-901 - Page 184

@albaman I think you did good research understanding some of the peculiar aspects of the HM901.

I owned or demoed extensively most DAPs in the past three years (including dx100) and currently own dx90, ak240, and hm901.

Imho sound wise as a standalone DAP hm901+balanced amp is the best. Better than the ak240 on balanced for most if not all of my phones.

The tradeoffs are size/slightly shorter battery, plastic appearance/built/finish, 100% functional but spartan UI that is best used with folder browsing only, and fine volume control is not possible with the stepped attenuater. If none of these are deal breakers then please join us!

Kkcc, so, in terms of SQ alone.. The hm901 is king of the hill still?

It IS in my opinion. In fact if I'm a better man that is more logical with spending, the 901+balanced card+re600 is all I need for my portable use. Alas I m not and I end up with all these "totl" daps and iems which are all very nice but not necessarily better sounding.... haha

Well, ure not alone on that one.. All these mixed reviews on the ak240 are quite weird. I mean, is it possible each unit have different sq?

I also like my ak240 a lot. It is the closest SQ-wise to 901+balanced amp and "fixes" every other things that are wrong with the 901. With many iem it's a toss up on which of ak240 or 901+balance card pairs better. For my iems most seems to still favor 901.

My earlier comment is really more on 901+balance card+re600 as a combo, for me, is right up there with ANY dap+c/iem combos regardless of price. Other combos will sound different, but from a more objective/technical perspective I don't find them more transparent/resolving/image better etc. The 901 and re600 were made for each other and it does show in how they performed.

Ah thanks for that.. Im was initially interested in the hm901..but its probably at its mid life now.. So, just waiting whats up hifimans sleeve next..

I completely agree with kkcc's assessment. I am hoping that RWAK240 will be at 95% of 901 vs. 90% for the AK240. And I do not think Hifiman will update their flagship soon...their strategy differs from AK. Plus they promised new cards soon....
Anyways AK won their bet. They put out a ridiculously expensive DAP, we all bought it, and many people a utterly convinced it sounds like 2.5k$, and it that it MUST sound better than 901, which is to me not true, and quite easy to spot. But people believe their wallet and not their ears.

thanks for the informed, helpful and on-brief reply, kkcc!

Looking at the current DAPs, I have to say that I am grateful that Hifiman for releasing the HM-901. Top spec, top sound, modular design and a more resonable price.

Not with DAPs at this price point, especially HFM.

well, will see...all this talk about the new AKs has strayed me away from Hifiman...but i still am following this thread quite closely hehe

The new AKs are upgrades for the 100 and 120...one of them is a "cheaper" 240 with less memory...no way their SQ is at 901 level...

gaaaaaaah..thats the thing bro that is stopping me getting the AK240....

i have the modded C4 pro now and is super happy with it and I really believe nothing can sound as good as this on a portable setup.

Its just curiosity is getting better of me...maybe I will just fly to singpore, indonesia or malaysia to demo both the HM901 and AK240 and make my final decision.
