HM-901 with U235 for Abyss, that's probably another milestone for Rudi in 2014.

Interesting. Please share some impressions with this pairing when convenient.

iMod+RSA intruder

R10 Dx100+mk3b

If so, the upcoming U235 amp card could be another serious contender for sure.

Both of them can't really drive the Abyss. Even with the mk3b+ the sound is loose and small soundstage and volume IIRC @ 12-2pm

This is where the 901 truly impresses me.

I used it with

Rwak100 + hifimi8 balanced outputs = still can't drive them

Macbook + Alo the Island
Much better. The island's mids are thin and I thought I like it more to pair with the lcd 3 than Abyss

901
Impressive. Can really drive Abyss and way better SQ than the 2 for me. The bass becomes tighter and details are more squeezed out and polished. Very good for portable listening but would obviously sound very slow when compared to Jh13 FP
The screws of the Abyss are tightened at max for more bass response.

Hope this helps

I have heard George HM 901 drive Parterre
SQ is very good , but I don't like the looking from HM 901 like old toys

So far only two portable set up that can drive Abyss

Set up A :
Source : iPhone 4S mod
Dac : cypher labs Class Solo original
Amp: ALO Rx 3 B not the PLUS ALO Rx 3 B +
Better in power to drive Abyss
ALO Rx 3 B has better Sq and synergy with Abyss compare ALO Rx 3 B+

Set up B :
Source : IPhone 5s
Dac : Cypher Labs Thoerem 720 copper
Amp : Cypher Labs Duet
Better In term of Sound Quality

Until now all my stand alone Dap like HDP R10 , Hi Sound Studio V 3rd ANV ,
Sony WM ZX 1, all I devices can not drive Abyss in very good SQ .

I will try one day hM901 at our local dealer with Abyss 1266

IMO

I currently have the 901 with a balanced card and some of my iems have balanced cables. This setup sounds great. But I am still not clear if these iems would sound better with the iem card....

I like the balanced card because of the driving power. I never heard the IEM card tho.

I have both the balanced and iem amp cards. I recently had the balanced card in because I was trying out the re 262 in balanced mode. That's another story.

I usually have the iem card by default: what I will say is that the iem card is more subtle, delicate & more airy. There is more space and better separation. After the iem card, the balanced card seems almost a little brutish on my C435. It's a bit more of a blunt instrument as compared to the precision of the iem amp card.

When I am next up in Shanghai, I have promised to let Mimouille try it. Then he can give his views too. smily_headphones1.gif

I think I will just buy it and try because that sounds like something I want, and the volume steps are just a hassle.

It reads like I will need to buy a new card, too.... for CIEM.........

I am thinking if I can just get the minibox card and use it in low gain for CIEM.... I am a bit conditioned to the balance card sound and I can see that minibox uses the same OPA627 (two less than the balance card)... I can then use high gain for portable cans that I like for a bit more comfort at home...any thoughts??

Actually, if you are using efficient portable cans, you don't need the minibox amp card. The minibox amp card was designed to drive difficult to drive full sized cans. I have one. I can confirm that it drives the notoriously inefficient AKG K702 effortlessly. I have also used it with the HD800 and T1. Which kind of shows you how powerful the minibox amp card is. Even better is that the signature is pretty good too - any amp card that makes the AKG K702 sound musical and engaging gets my vote! :)

On another note, I believe Dr Fang Bian warns against using the minibox with IEMs; the concern is that it may be too powerful for IEMs. Customer Service at Hifiman echoes the sentiment. So, I would proceed with caution. I have personally tried out the minibox with the Fitear F111, Fitear 333 CIEM and the AKG K3003 without killing any of them. Yet. In fact, the Fitear F111 positively sings with the minibox amp card: it becomes open, rich and complex. I guess when Suyuma San crafted the F111 as a tribute to the Etymotic ER4S, he also reproduced the hard-to-drive factor.

So, unless your portable cans need that much power, I don't think you need the minibox card. I drive my Grados happily from my iem amp card.

@Kiats

Thanks for your comment. Hopefully, I can buy a used minibox card from a member here. I sold my F111 to my friend at work but I still keep the er4s. I guess the cost of modding the er4s with an upgrade cable terminated with balance connector will be around the price of the card. Could be fun.

I have a Lexar one in my 901 and it works fine. About half full as well.
