I so happen to have chances speaking with the headfonia owner mike , he does have a certain liking to the 801, but he also said that if he have the money he would actually buy the tera player , the tera player is also highly praised by the people who gathers in the store

I own both and they are complimentary. When well matched, the Tera sounds more natural, fluid, effortless...you are not listening to SQ, just enjoying music. But bear in mind these ideal matches are rare. And anyways, the 901 with balanced card is more powerful, has more authority. The soundstage is more spacious and the sound is more transparent overall. I switch from one to the other and find pleasure in both.

Mimouille, is the 901 with balanced card compatible with standard headphone? or do they  have to be balanced with hifimans balanced plug?

Works with all headphones. There is a balanced / single ended switch. However volume steps are IMO too large for iems.

Congratz in scoring one of these gems.  Waiting for your impression.

if for example I am looking to use some ordinary headphones like dt1350 or something along that line that doesn't require that much power, which of the amp card would you suggest?

No clue as I do not use cans and have not compared cards....but doubt you can go wrong with balanced.

I have the stock, balanced, and iem cards for the 901. IMO I find the balanced card to mate well with my Sennheiser hd580 and hifiman HE-500 in balanced or single ended. Powerful, clean, and musically articulate. I also agree that the balanced card volume steps are too LARGE for iems. Even for the hifiman re600 balanced that I bought and returned. However, the iem card mates well with my akg 702 Annie's, ultrasone edition 8, denon ah-d2000, and shure se530's. Because those phones are more sensitive the iem card is a much better fit. Also powerful, clean, and articulate. In the 8 weeks that I've owned them, I am hard pressed to hear a sound quality difference between the balanced and iem cards. The only difference I have heard so far is power. The real test for me came when I listened to the jh audio Roxanne's at CanJam with the 901 iem card. I was very very impressed. The staging and clarity from bottom to to top was phenomenal IMO. My wallet is now considerably lighter. I am going to need therapy. biggrin.gif

Yeah, I am sort of waiting on the hm 802 which allegedly use the same amp cards as the 901 , might as well ask now right? (at least to quench the thirst from the hype )

Interesting. And have you ever had the opportunity to try the Minibox ?

Yes the 802 share ALL accessories and cables with the 901 and their form factor is identical. Will use the same UI and firmware also.

The key differences are:
- Dual wm8740 DAC instead of dual ess9018 on 901
- normal POT vs the high quality stepped attenuator on 901 (some may actually prefer this over the stepped approach for usability, though sound quality suffers)
- grayish blue (or bluish gray) vs black on the 901

Good to know! Also gives me peace of mind knowing that they are not releasing a new flagship.

Unfortunately no, I have not had a chance to listen to or try the Minibox.  I am curious how the Minibox sounds.  Maybe at a meet sometime.  On another note (there goes my wallet again), I just received my Centrance HiFi-M8 iDevice version and am doing A/B comparison to the 901.  I am using a 160GB iPod Classic with the HiFi-M8.  I am using a 128GB SDXC with the 901.  All of my music (eclectic tastes ranging from Miles Davis to Bartok to The Rolling Stones to Basia to Tupac to Toto, etc., etc.) is lossless 16bit/44.1 in either ALAC, FLAC, or WAV.  First impressions: The 901 sound quality is two or three steps above the HiFi-M8.  There is more air and pinpoint imaging/staging with the HM-901 compared to the HiFi-M8 in my opinion. In addition to the HM-901 multiple note and articulate bass.  I can actually hear the different bass notes of Eminem, Nelly, Akon, etc.  I can also hear this with the HiFi-M8 it's just I have to listen harder.  All IMO.  However, the HiFi-M8 has greater flexibility with the impedence, gain, bass, and treble selectors.  In addition to the ability to listen to my laptop, iPad, iPhone, and iPod via the HiFi-M8.  I only wish I could do the same with the 901.  Yet, so far (only three days; maybe 8 or 9 hours total) when I just want to listen to music and it's well-recorded 16bit/44.1 or Hi-Res (separate SDXC card for the 901; laptop for the HiFi-M8) I find myself enjoying the sound quality of the 901 more than the HiFi-M8.  More impressions to come.  As always YMMV.  We live (and listen) in a great time!!!

Just wonder if you guys have upgraded the firmware to the final version v1.082 yet? I've upgraded mine, now the boot up time has been cut short to 1/3 of its original time, only takes about 20s from switch on to the home screen :)  This has been the best firmware upgrade so far.
