HM-901 - Page 156

Sold off my HM901 for an AK120, thought I'd benefit more with the better UI/built quality and smaller size. But I missed the sound from HM901, got it back and sold the AK120 after some A/B comparison. Won't be looking back at AK120 again.

How much did you sell it for initially?

Sold the HM901 w standard card+balanced card + RE600 together for less than $1200USD. You know how it goes when you buy new and sell second hand.

I don't think that the Sony would have a better sound quality than the HM901, even for iems, but there's a chance for be surprised cos the amp used in the Sony is digital, so at least would be very efficient and the warming of the player would be minimal. But I still have my doubts cos the digital amps haven't make it big on the high end market.

You need to hear an HM901! The EQ is completely unnecessary at this level of SQ when there's no room interaction, the sound is really smooth, even listening old recordings or overproduced or with a lot of distortion or static... I still haven't found a track that sound harsh thru the HM901.

The EQ, is indeed not necessary at all for this. Also agree with fengwei that the 901 is really special in that sounding. Me too searching other brand but the 901 really sound different that other dap missing. I almost sell off that too. But for the vocal side I still think my 801 is better than 901. However what the real feeling in SQ that the 901 has, it lacks in the 801. In short depend what you looking at. Believe I am luck that till now I do not have the issues which others pointed out. I still using FW 1.07 at time I got the player.

I found pairing out with the Wagnus is better much in the sound stage and much we'll define. Lastly as a standalone player, the 001 really sound real good in my opinion.

Could someone kindly advice any place to order a adapter for the 901 out in order to use my mini to mini. I got the line out from hifiman but I would like to test and use my mini toini cable. Would appreciate that. Not sure Fang would like to sell one.

Best Rgds,

,

congrats on your Wagnus, can you let me know if it is the red or blue knob version? I really want to own one, too!

For the LOD adapter, I was informed by other fellow 901 owners on this forum that I could purchase one from here:

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.5.w4002-1051639114.33.mduo2d&id=24750032161

The gold one is LO, the silver one is for Coaxial in.

I think you can just email head-direct to ask them to sell you one, they are very nice and accommodating.

Good stuff on the Wagnus, please take some pic to share with us!

Hi cosmicholyghost, mine is the Red knob and much better one. Believe the stock still available just days ago and u should order immediately.

Anyway, just using two battery and no worry of exchange or replacement in future and thus maintenance issue less and Japan stuff should be very reliable and furthermore hand made. Frankly, it is really good and the high roll off smoothly as even the 901 on this loose slightly( surprising the 901 high control is also good).

By the way may I know the address or email to contact to buy the adapter. Thanks pal.

Tempting me with it but I highly doubt, however smooth the sound that I would be happy being pinned to that one specific sound without the option to adjust it from genre to genre, to me that adjustment, something the AK120 actively boasts about is akin to buying a car and not being able to adjust the seat, being told that its already in the perfect position regardless of who is sitting in it. Listening to sound and music is a subjective experience, that fact shouldn't be denied to the customer of a product.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your interest in HIFIMAN 901.

Yeah, we have considered about the EQ setting on HM-901. But I''m afraid it will take us some time to complete it.

Best regards,

The use of the word, "will" implies that its in progress... if they had used the word, "would" it would imply that it had been a thought but is unlikely to happen. Interesting.

Would not be easy implementing it UI wise and there'd be 101 complaints about peoples subjective experience through it no doubt, ideas that any new version with the setting has effected the sound quality etc. The reply reminds me of someones comment that the 901 has been rushed to market... am seeing Ibasso bringing out a new model within a years time, would need to do so to keep with the new trend and design of the Dx50.

My finger is literally hovering over an AK120 purchase, the other 9 are currently looking for a good amp to rock with it... in my mind I'm hoping that an updated UI in 2015 (.lol. )would make the 901 the be all end all I had hoped it to be.

Yep, that's the way:)

The 901 is clearly at the top soundwise at this moment. But I must admit that after going through all high en DAPs, no combo will make me give up my Tera + SE5 combo.

From another thread, might be helpful for others trying to draw comparisons...

"901 will be a bag of fun when people start making cards to fit into it, is a smart move business and other wise to have the modern open source initiative as an option. Its there that they obviously understand the idea of subjectivity and experience, people valuing various experiences through various sources from audio quality at various levels of resolution to the various headphones available.

It would be difficult not sticking to the balanced card for the sound quality and suffering the bad battery life... in comparing the AK120 most would be/are comparing it to the balanced card experience rather than the others I assume.. am not sure what a fair comparison using one of the 901 cards would actually be... the battery life of the cards is not measured individually or matched to the type of files being used, recall the AK team mentioning their battery life with the type of file used in playback... the 901 would not fare so well with a high res 24/192 playback alongside its balanced card and I have no intentions of using anything less."

An Ibasso Dx200 might force you to reconsider that statement .lol.
