901 with upgraded amp board is also a good choice and seems like a deal for its price comparatively.

Its not the amp- I've also been using my alo international and still get sibilance with certain vocals; I've also tried just my rwak100 and 1plus2s and get sibilance too.  I think I'm just particularly sensitive to it :o

Or maybe you have snakes at home ?

Few quick questions

1. For $999 package, does it include the standard amp card ?

There are three addon amp cards, minibox, IEM, and balanced.

So If I buy the package with balanced one then I will have two amp cards. First one is standard amp and second the balanced one. I can swap between these two ? Right ?

2. As a DAC can it run entirely on USB power or will it require battery power too ?

3. Can I play music while it's charging ?

1. Ask the store you are buying from. They can package and price them dfferently.

2. USB DAC is not supported in the unit itself. A rumored docking station (yet to be released) is required for usb dac function.

3. Technically you can but not recommended and may actually discharge quicker than recharge depending on volume and amp board. Also may damage charger and/or battery and/or the unit.

Thanks for the reply. Still need more info about first two points.

1. The info I got was that the standalone unit @ $999 will only act as a DAC. I need to buy either miniboc or IEM or balanced amp card. So, I just want to make sure that the standalone unit retailed @ $999 is without any amp car installed or is there a standard amp car already installed (apart from the 3 addon amp cards advertised).

2. So as of now there is no way I can plug it into my laptop as a DAC ?

1. As mentioned u need to ask the shop direct as even head-direct or hifiman's own online store in china have had different packages and price at different times. Even if anyone tells you anything on HF they won't represent the shop and you may or may not get the items we mentioned.

2. You need a SPDIF out (usually coaxial out) from your PC to use it as DAC without that elusive dock

Alright. Thanks.

Getting harder to decide now. Since I travel frequently, AK120's all in one solution looks good but then if I consider the sound quality alone then HM901 seems to be better.

I use Miracle and Merlin mostly. How much is the difference in sound quality if I go for AK120. I do have a Meier Audio Stepdance for amping if required.

Normally to get the best sound out of the AK120 and depending on the headphone you need to use it with a portable external amp. Now it makes sense to use the 901 by itself only one box.

If I'm going to knit pick which I think is fair given the price, I'd say my problems are that I still pick up sibilance on certain songs (the weeknd's "the morning") that I can't seem to get rid of through a copper cable or eq (I think the problem is inherent with the BAs used by the 1plus2s), and that its really easy to listen to music too loud because this system is amazingly capable of making music feel alive.

I'd love a chance to hear the 901 and compare to what I've been rocking since they seem so similar in terms of use... I'm looking forward to comparing and will post results biggrin.gif

I kinda agree with you about the 1Plus2 although for me, the Uber cable did help. What copper cables did you use with the 1Plus2 if you don't mind sharing?

I do enjoy the 901 Uber balanced to 1Plus2 mind you. I'm beginning to feel it's not so much of the treble forwardness being toned down, but more the spaciousness in the trebles that just gives more room to breath that it doesn't sound so congested (and therefore misrepresented as sibilance).

for #2, someone posted over another thread -- connecting a Squeezebox to a HM901 to an external amp.

looking on the screen of the HM901, it shows a USB related graphics.

*edit: Could be OTG function, using the HM901 as USB disk? not sure

This function makes me interested with the HM901 (plus dock) makes me think, if I should give up the DX100 and my 11.32 and go for this to have a unified desktop and portable rig

WAV as the file type will require the least amount of processing (none) and use the least battery time but will take up more space since it is not compressed. FLAC and AAC are both compressed and use processor power to de-compress prior to playing and use more battery power than WAV but are more compact and use up less memory space.

[/ I thought there were others that were uncompressed like WAV.

Are there any other uncompressed ones besides WAV

The two most 'popular' un-compressed audio formats are WAV and AIFF, they are both PCM files.
