This is the 2nd time it happened. The other one will be sent for repair..

The shutdown in 4 seconds is a normal dialog when battery is about to be fully drained.  There should be another dialog probably 5 or 10 mins before that tell you it's nearly empty.

The 1hr battery life is more concerning.  You may want to get it replaced, or get both the battery AND the charger replaced.

The charger had been a sore point.  Are you absolutely it is fully charged (i.e. charged for around 6 hrs continuously with the unit turned off)?  There is a green LED on the charge that suppose to go on when charging and off when done.  But there are a few issues with it:

1. it is sitting too deep and the LED is not very bright making it difficult to see if it is actually lit up from an off angle.  I have had experience where I thought I went off but when I go pick it up and look straight into it it is still on.  (and this was in a dimly lit room in the evening!)

2. Said LED is prone to failing - a number of reports saying it either NOT lit up at all or it lit up for a while and goes off BEFORE completely charging

3. The charge will have two stages of "hot" and "warm" throughout the full charging cycle - from 0% to about 65% full it will be VERY HOT, then it will enter the 2nd stage where it continue to charge but only lukewarm from 65% to 100%.  I think this 2nd stage actually took longer than the first.

4. It won't fully charge if it was not switched off.  It doesn't matter if it is playing music or standby with screen switched off, the battery is drained just as fast.  Plugging it in when power on may actually drain (albeit slowly) the battery instead of charging it.

Combining these quirkiness of the charger I have first-hand experience, and read other's postings that the battery wasn't fully charged when we thought it was.  Worth an extra night to charge it and see if it wasn't fully charged earlier.

Thank you for your reply. Nothing seemed to happened base on your post in my case. I have charged them (1st and 2nd unit of 901) for 6 hrs. The charger was working fine, the green light is very visible, it turns off after it is fully charged. I used the first 901 (stock card) for 45 minutes switching from iem and headphone, after using them I was planning to add more songs so i turned it off after setting the volume to minimum.
Then i connected the 901 usb, after 2 secs i heard a sound from inside that something burned inside and it is pretty obvious when i smell it. Then " battery empty & shut down " happens.

2nd 901 (balanced card), before i charged them, i loaded songs via 901 (batt was low after) usb then turned it off (fully charged for 6 hrs) was able to use it today for 1 hr and everything worked fine then turned it off. After I got back home, it won't turn on, made a hard reset after a while it turned on then voila as soon as the homescreen appeared, " battery empty & shut down " again. Reinstalled the balanced card but same thing happens. Then I smelled the unit and it was the sa e smell again but this time lesser burn in smell. I took off the batt now and hope to get a reply from hifiman asap. Both 901 have the latest firmware.

I normally charge mine for 3 hours after the green light has gone off.

The first 901 i had, i charged them the 2nd time despite of the batt empty thing and the next day.. Same thing still happens.

1.081 beta was not working out for me. It kept resetting my player, despite everything I tried (different cards, exFat vs FAT32, etc).

Since I couldn't find the 1.080 to rollback to, I decided to just up to the 1.082 beta.

Everything seems good so far.

Instructions are same as always:

Copy the zip file without renaming it, into the root folder of your FAT32 sd card.

Turn off the player, then hold the home button and the power on button at the same time to turn on the update mode.

When the player turns on, you can take your finger off the power on button but continue to hold the home button.

Finally, when the update starts, you can remove your finger from the home button.

That link wasn't working (right now) so I went to Head-Direct:

HIFIMAN HM-901 Firmware v1.082 Beta Update
2013-9-18 1:17:08

Firmware Update Instruction:

1. Please download the new firmware zip file first and then copy it to your SD card
(Do not change the name of the firmware file or decompress it). Only the FAT32 SD card can be used.
2. While pressing the HOME button, hold the Power key up until the HM-901 is power on.
After the screen is on, release the power key. Then release the HOME button until the hifiman logo disappears.
Now the player will be in recovery mode.
3. Wait until the first picture shows on the screen. The system will be updated automatically.
4. After the update is done, power off the player and then reboot it to finish the whole process.

Bug issued:
- can support aif file
- change the display mode of the battery
- delete a file
- some other bugs that will cause the player to reboot

Thanks. The link still works for me, strange...

But I see now in the changelog that they fixed some 'restart bugs'. I definitely faced these.

The latest firmware didn't completely resolved the unexpected restart as it happened to me once so far.

Lets see if I get it. My previous firmware wasn't even letting me listen to anything at all so this is a definite improvement.

It's now happened to me too. Was on a cue file that linked to a flac file.

I've now turned off cue support and all is ok again.

If you're using the same charger for both HM901s, then it seems the charger is the problem. If you have 2xHM-901s (assuming full package) then you should have another charger to try. Have you given that a shot?

I had 2xHM-901s, both with balanced amps. Both I didn't have problems, although the 1st HM-901 was in my ownership for less than 2 weeks, and it went to spkrs01 - of which, I didn't hear of him having any problems either.

Now I am using 1082 firmware and most of problems have been solved - M4A files  now play .

The main issue I have now is skipping songs which I never had before - sometimes no sound but the player actually works more than is doesn't  not bad for $999

I think if you spend $1898 with HIFIMAN they may  produce a player that actually works all the time.

Come on HIFIMAN your nearly there - more firmware  updates please

Preferably with a fix so beginning of new tracks are actually played - and compilation albums are shown as one and not one per artist. Cover art embedded in FLAC files would also be very welcome...
