To make sure the folder icon has (the correct) image, in the folder properties select optimize for pictures (and check the box that all folders within the main folder is so also). Then select big icons or preferably extra big icons in folder view, and walk through the album folders to check that the folders are updated with the cover art. If not, try renaming the folder and if this doesn't do it then make a new folder and put the files in the new one. This may be time-consuming, but it gets the job done.

I originally expected that you would need a jpg-file in each of the album folders with the audio files, but FLAC or MP3 files with cover art embedded might be enough for Windows to fetch the image and embed it in the folder icon. The picture I posted above is showing two images embedded in the folder icon: One is from the jpg-file and the other is from the image embedded in the (first) FLAC file in that folder. This makes me suspect that you actually don't need the jpg file, but will do with the embedded images in the audio files. Bottom line is that Windows finds the content of the folder and displays it in the folder icon.

The HM-901 reads the image in the folder ICON - and voila - you have cover art shown.

Well, and after the job is done, you can go back in folder properties and select optimize for music again.

NEW EDIT:

It looks like you have to do it on the PC, before transfering the folders/files to the SD card, because when I do as described in the folders on the SD card, then it doesn't work...

you might be onto something but it is still strange that some artworks are just displayed while other are not.

How do you transfer music? copy and paste/ move folders within Windows?

I usually use Jriver.

I just copy-paste in Windows.

Frankly, I am quite sure I am onto something, because it started with when I saw some very small cover art in some albums, and these were from the early time when I used Windows Media Player to find cover art and embed these, only to realize that it was only the folder icon that got an image: no cover art was embedded in the FLAC files. Now these old cover art images showed up on the HM-901 even though I have other jpg files in the album folder. THIS makes me quite certain that the HM-901 displays the image which is embedded as folder icon, and it would also explain why people find no order in why some albums shows cover art and others doesn't.

Also I could never get the back cover to  lock when the balanced card was installed. Not a problem with the stock card installed. Also many other issues. After quite a lot of frustration and no solution from tech support (that made sense) I returned everything for a refund. I don't believe the HM901 is ready for the consumer market yet. Way to many issues.

I enjoyed my HM801.

I'm moving on to another manufacture.Very disappointed.

Seems like heat is the major problem in HM-901. Is this problem only happen when using "Balanced Amplifier Card'?
How about the "IEM and MiniBox Amplifier Card"?

Up to date, has Hifiman resolved the heat problem in HM-901?

Well this is not really a "problem" as the heat dissipation is part of the design decision to provide max power. As such, it won't be "fixed". The more powerful the amp section the shorter the battery runtime and the hotter it gets.

While it is very warm, it would only be a discomfort if you tried to carry it in your pants pocket in 35°C weather like I do in Hong Kong.

Plus I heard you only wear skinny jeans.

Mine (balanced card) does get warm no doubt but nothing excessive but I only use iems. I am considering trying the IEM card as the battery life with the balanced card seem rather short. Much like 5h in my case, maybe less. Did anybody properly measure it?

The 901 does get warm with use especially in enclosed spaces... for mobility I use RWAK120 :)

Stupid question here just to be sure. If you have a cable terminated in TRRS you need a TRRS to 3.5 to use it on another DAP that does not have a TRRS. The RE600 has a TRRS so does it come with the adapter?

Yes, yes and yes. ;)

While I agree play time with Balanced amp is a bit on the short side, I am thinking of getting an extra battery and the charger box instead of going for the IEM amp. This will be cheaper and will double play time - and I can still benefit from balanced drive with my IEMs. The only drawbacks - compared to going for the IEM amp card - that I can think of, will be the heat and that volume control won't be as fine trimmed.

Just ordered the IEM card. I had to go through Moon Audio as strangely Head-Direct can't sale it to the EU yet but had no issue selling me the HM-901 with balanced card??

Where do you get the spare battery and charger box from?

More on cover art: We do need a .jpg image file in the album folder for the 901 to show cover art. File extension .jpeg won't show, it has to be jpg. Also, gray scale (color profile) jpg files are not shown correctly. When converted to sRGB they show up correctly. With two albums I struggled until I changed the file name content removing the '. That is, instead of typing can't, I write can-t, and instead of smokin', I simply write smokin. At least after these changes were done, cover art is shown.

The cover art still seems to be derived from the embedded image in the folder icon though. I am not 100% sure that it ONLY reads these, but it certainly does read these folder icon images.

Cover art so far only shows when using folder browsing though. The exception being MP3 files, that show the embedded cover art within each file. That's how it should be with FLAC files too, and hopefully will be in an upcoming UI update.

Head-Direct.

Battery, $99:

Charging box, $49:

Your HM-901 charger will feed the box / battery.

I would guess Moon Audio as they both operate out of the USA. I bought my player from Moon .

One question what earphones are you using with the IEM when it arrives ? I have the same set up but not made a final choice on the earphones - I have to say the IEM card will probably drive most things.

I got the RE600 at the same time, which I find superb and very hard to fault but so far I still enjoy more my InEar Stadediver 3, not as "hifi" or transparent but quite a bit more fun.

Thanks Lars for the info. Never noticed those on the website.
