I guess that puts me one step closer to the 901. Is it really as ugly, large, and awkward in person as in the pictures or is there something I am not seeing? The form factor is probably the only reason I don't have one in my hands already and require such specific input. As for the Clip Zip, not only does it sound great, it is a pleasure to use given its form factor. Just the Clip Zip plus my Hidition NT6 Pro on the road is such a killer combo.

Could you imagine convenience of having the balanced 901 sound in the Clip Zip form factor?

I wish the ak120 was a good balance between form and sound. I actually picked that over the 901 as I really think it looks ugly. It took me a few week to not feel awkward taking the 901 out in public. But the more I use it the hard for me to accept the less full and less detailed sound from ak120 standalone. I may end up going for the rwak120s mod and pair it with a sr71b, but then it would lose the form advantage. Really struggling what to do with my ak120 now.

Btw I still use my clip zip whenever I feel like to be "active", which is not a lot. biggrin.gif

See, not only is the clip zip a great form factor, but it helps you get into shape. wink.gif

Yeah the form factor is an issue...the 901 is kinda like having three iPhone 4's stacking on top of each other lol.

is the general verdict from AK120 owners that 901 sounds better?

so far using single-ended on a balance card version sounds so fantastic, sounds is as good as ibasso DB2 + RSA intruder stack. However, I am a bit concerned of the durability of this unit hence I may not take it out as much....I would rather commute using DX50 instead.

OT:

My X3 mod is to change the OpAmp from AD8397 to AD8620 and the DAC from WM8740 to WM8741.. It is also supposed to be a Balanced phone out. The cost set me back aproox. 380 usd (I am not complaining as I do not possess the talent to mod it myself)... the unit i demoed carry the sound details like studio monitors.. I will find out more after I pick up tonite... The downside of this mod is that it will only support up to 24/96 and the battery life will reduce to approx. 8 hours

It has been a good week for portable audio for me except the delay of DX50..

I'm also interested in a comparison between AK120 and HM-901 in terms of DSD performance.

OT:

Ouch, you went for that mod by YY Pro Audio with BTL output? I just found another similar option (more affordable to boot?) in Mong Kok to be available soon:

Coming Level 3: 12MHz - Low Jitter Clock searching in progress!!!

https://www.facebook.com/Hercules.Workshop

It would be cool to provide that particular option for AK120 in the future.

When I received my HM901 I was surprised for "how small it is"... I mean I was expecting to be larger. Somebody said that it's like 3 iphone 4 stacked and I agree that it's s good reference about size. Also it's pretty like a square, it's not ugly it's "X", nobody has ask me with curiosity 'what it is' like happens often with my Galaxy Note 2 with extended battery that looks larger than the hm901. When I have the hm901 in my hand I feel like holding something serious, that doesn't shout "look at me" and I like that.

I cannot transfer files to SD card unless I use card reader...On XP, it will say "card is not formatted". On Win 7, it is marked as read only.

OT: Yes, I did visit YY Pro... They are nice people and accommodating to newbie like myself. I am not surprised that they would do the same for DX50 of modding a higher end chip.. I may volunteer my unit for trial ..LoL it should be fun.

No comparison, DSD on 901 1.081beta is simple not usable due to hissing.  Happens to 8 out of 10 files or so.  Need to wait for the fix before we can properly compare.

On AK120, I cannot hear a difference between the dff/dsf file vs a PCM (.wav) version converted from it.  Given the slowing down of the UI, I prefer converting the files to .wav or .flac over playing the .dff/.dsf directly.  AK120 also won't catalogue the .dff/.dsf into its database - can only be accessed via Folder navigation.

By the same token I don't expect DSD to sound better than PCM files converted from the DSD on HM901.

YMMV

After trying tons of pouches in camera stores, I found one that suits the 901 quite well, at least until I find something a bit fancier from Tumi or LV ;)

^^ Perhaps you need to cut some holes for better ventilation

It's just for transport, I will not use it while inside...not for more than 15mn at least.

I've read that a few times before in the 901 posts about how it is smaller in person that the purchaser imaged. From the pictures of the 901 in peoples hands, it doesn't look that way. Maybe that's because becoming an audiophile causes peoples hands to shrink. regular_smile%20.gif

If the 901 is really like a stack of 3 iPhone4s, then this AK120 pictured above next to the 901 must be 1/3 smaller than a iPhone4 which is much better than I expected. Does anyone have a picture of the 901 next to an iPhone like the pictures above for prospective?

Does the 901 scream quality when felt and examined in the hand or does it feel and look like an outdated 1980s tape recorder. Is my wife likely to throw it away thinking it is junk when ruthlessly cleaning my drawers, or would she just know that it is a quality item?

1) NOOOOOOOOO

2) YES, or a radio

3) YES, and you can tell her you bought it from some old man's yard sale for $10 because you are a nice person.

But it is built well (feel solid and substantial in hand) and scratch resistant that you don't need to "handle with care"....  But its... em.... unique aesthetics... was a big hurdle for me to overcame when I finally purchased it.
