How is the build quality of the 901 holding up? if its good did use purchase it from moon-audio or head-direct?

Edit: i am getting the beyerdynamic t5p which amp card will sound better with this the balanced?

The HM901 build quality is good. The hardware feels solid and there's a nice weight to it.

The only issue now is the software, which from time to time can be irritating to use but nothing a good restart won't help.

For the sound quality coming from it, the hassle is worth it.

If the bugs can be sorted out soon, it'll be a killer player to have.

Has anyone compared HM801 and HM901 balanced amp vs balanced amp?

Thanks in advance!

It seems quite a few HM-901 owners here in HF are opting for the balanced amp module however I'm not certain how many of these owners are actually using balanced cables with their DAP. I have my Tralucent Uber cabled balanced to TRRS and it should be on its way to me now however I also wanted to use the cable in normal Single-Ended terminated amps/DAPs.

There's a chap here in HF from Thailand who's a DIYer and some of you may have seen his Kobiconn->3.5mm SE Adapter, and thought I'd challenge him to make a balanced 3.5mm TRRS ->3.5mm SE adapter. To my surprise he did take up the challenge and did a one-off TRRS->SE adapter for me.

I thought I'd share his work here in case any of you are interested in DIY adapters too.

Yes that is exactly how I want to use it! With TRRS plug. I have the RE600 on the way and I have a Protector Female -> TRRS male adaptor on the way.

But I wonder if the HM901 will have much improvement over the 801 in this config..

I have the HM-801 with balanced amp and also a HM-901 with balanced amp, however not present. I expect to have it in about 3 weeks time. When I receive it, I will of course compare and post my impressions.

Great work! But I do not understand what this adapter is for.

This balanced-2-SE adapter is for those who have headphones or earphones terminated with TRRS balanced connectors for their HM-901 but also want to use those balanced headphones/earphones with normal unbalanced/Single Ended amps/DAPs.

e.g. I've got the Tralucent Uber cables terminated with TRRS connector to make the most out of the HM-901 balanced amp module. However I don't want that uber cable to be dedicated solely for the HM-901 only and want to use that Uber cable on other normal amps/DAPs (like the AK120). so I'd need to use this adapter.

So I was chatting with Hifiman, and they told me that we need to do two things to protect our earphones with the new HM901 balanced amp:

1) always make sure to turn to SE mode if not using balanced earphones (this is obvious)

2) but also to turn off the player before switching earphones. I clarified 3 times, and in the end the Hifiman told me that this was the first time he'd heard of such an instruction himself, but that HM801B (balanced) is fine- no need to switch off before switching earphones.

Anyone knows anything about this?

Boo! that is ridiculous. It's not like 901 can turn on/off instantly on within seconds.... can't imagine myself bothering with that precautionary procedures!!! I see this just as a lame excuse or disclaimer if ever sth wrong happened. I m sure it would probably be factually correct to say it is safer to switch off before changing earphone as there may be one in a gazillion times the amp or the phone is fried when switching with power on....... I will take my chances and file for warranty if things does happen.

This sounds insane, maybe email Fang Bian about this so he can confirm?

Actually this is what they say:

"Caution: To make sure your earphone will not be damaged, please make sure to switch to normal position when you use the balanced card to drive a regular unbalanced earphone. Also, please do not plug in or remove the earphone while the player is on. "

Later clarification:

"That is to say, you'd better not plug in or remove the earphone while the player is playing/ working. Please plug in your earphone while the status of the player is off. "

Finally:

"HM-801 is fine. Yeah, I also heard this first time. We only have this warning for HM-901 with balanced card. I don't know the exact reason, but to protect the earphone. "

So you can't 1) plug in 2) remove. BOTH. While the player is on. WOW!
