Yes, the IEM itself doesn't matter, to get balanced sound, just the cable needs to be terminated with the 3.5 trrs plug. You don't need any adapter to use the balanced amp board with normal non trrs cable. You just plug it into the 901 and select "Normal" on the unit itself.

On the other hand, if you have a trrs plug and want to use it with normal / SE sources, then you need an adapter: female trrs to male trs. Head-Direct sells these cheaply.

After 84 glorious pages, I have finally completed this thread.  I started reading it after I got the notification from Drew at Moon Audio that the 901 was in stock and shipping.  I figured... I'll jump on over to the thread and see what this is about.  Shouldn't be very long.  I mean after all, it was just released...  Boy was I wrong.  As you receive the 901, keep the impressions and reviews coming guys.  Thanks.

Did you order with Moon Audio? I thought they were shipping this week only to find they are 'closed' this week... Was a bit peeved to find that out after I had placed my order...

I read the 21st is their official release date.

A-ha! That sounds interesting, because that's the day after Head-Direct in China has HM-901 in stock again. In other words, if it's true they ship after July 21st, it could very well be that Moon Audio doesn't have a single HM-901 yet, but simply receives the payment and then has HiFiMan sending the 901 from China.

I did not order.  I just found out about the 901 when I got the email and FB notification from Moon Audio.  I'm still relatively new to this game, so I wasn't aware of all the hullabaloo surrounding the 901 until then.  Right now I'm more in research mode since all my files are 320 cbr.  I need to rip hi res files, find a suitable file management program, and a portable player to play them.  So I have plenty of time to research all the available options before pulling the trigger on a player.

901 shines even with 320CBR files.  The DAC and AMP section (especially with the balanced amp boards' 4x OPA627 and 4x BUF634) are impressively implemented.

Btw you can't really "rip" hi res file from CD as it is recorded at 16/44.1.  Upsampling them would not add to sound quality.  You can purchase HiRes files from various sites that get these direct from studio masters.

Hope this helps.
