Sennheiser HDVD800 Headphone Amplifier - Page 129

^ without wanting to step on the toes of HDVD800 owners, based on the 1 hour I spent at my local headphone store, to me the amp is nothing to shout about.

At double the price of WA7, I was expected to be swept away by the sound, alas I had put my expectation too high.

I only auditioned with the single-ended cable as Sennheiser Asia was too stingy to loan the dealer the balance cable for HD800 to be used with this amp.

So if you want to run your HD800 single-ended, might as well save your money and get the WA7.

Other users might want to chime in their experienced using the balance cable.

You don't have to worry about tube rolling on WA7 as so far, I only come across 3 brands of 6c45 tubes that can be used on WA7, which are Sovtek, Electro Harmonic and Reflector.

Good morning.

I owned both and still have the hdvd800. Before I say my opinion. What music did you listen to the unit on.
What resolution , and did you use the DAC. Of the hdvd800.

Please answer

Ok I will say something. The hdvd 800. Is a very neutral amp a real wire with a gain. The dac inside is mediyoker but does a good job , but makes you feel un involved with the music. Tube amps no matter what ones add warmth some a little some plenty. If you feed the hdvd800 some good it's great , feed it something less and it's not so great. The point is it masked nothing and tells you everything. Ingnance is bliss comes to mind. The wa7 is nice and polite. Get my drift .

The dac in the wa 7 is no better than the dac in the hdvd800. In fact the dac in the hdvd800 is more revealing and polished. The woo amp pairs nice with many headphones and all iem,s I tried . So,it becomes what are you looking for.

If you can be happy with a polite dac and amp get the woo it is a really great looking item. Truly nice just to look at.
I sold mine to a very nice person who I am sure is enjoying it. Mine was black on black the last of it's kind.

But if you want to hear all there is weather good or not. Then the hdvd800 is your choice. Now I did not sell my woo amp
Because of what it lacked , I just have way to much stuff. But I do prefere my coffee with a lot of flavor and no to little sugar and black. On dishwater coffee getting s the milk and sugar. Hope this helps

Thanks for the quick responses.

We'll I guess my expectations are to lean more to the HDVD800 because I want it to match better, and from what Senn say they are suppose to be a perfect marriage.
However at double the price I don't want to be disappointed, being that I don't have a local shop I could audition the HDVD800 it's a much bigger risk, and if I go with the Woo then I'll never know if I missed out on the Senn sound. Thx again.

I bought the woo after hearing it. But it was the looks that maybe by it. It sounded as I described that day. But the hdvd800 I purchased on the fact it was a sennheiser product and a flagship one. You can feel how you wish about looks but a better quality sound is something everyone should hear. It sounds like you did understand the facts properly. But I you cannot be under whelmed at better and the amp is much better. If you want something very good get the better product .

Hd 800s £1000 hdvd800 £1500, the dac in your hdvd800 about £200, Dacs r 1 of the most important pieces of equipment u can have in your system, they determine how you're music will sound.2 get the best out of your hd800s and your amp get a better dac, naim dac,a chord dac, then listen, and be amazed at what your hd800s and your amp really sound like .what I'm trying 2 say is,you're spent £2500 on ur headphones and amp, don't leave 1 of the most important peaces of equipment out.i use a naim dac with mine, sounds fantastic, and before anyone says dacs don't make a difference, try 1 of the above dacs out,hd800s,hdv800 or hdvd600 your in headphone heaven.

Does the HDVD800 suffer the same problem of the WA22 where if you're not using balanced, you only get 50% of the output (only using half of the amp for single ended)?

You know I do not know. Good question. As I had the wa 22 first and have the bal cables on all the time now.

I can test it tomorrow. Sorry

Careful not to make a purchase based on a company's marketing claims.

Any balanced unit will do this for SE output.

Can I ask you then, do you own a set of HD800? And what do you recommend? Thanks.

I own the HDVD since around 6 months, but yesterday I heard it the first time in combination with the HD800 in a local store, and it actually was the first time that I liked the HD800....for my taste still a little too much to the bright side with most of the music I listened to, but all in all surely worth further considerations....

If HDVD should be 800, as the 600 is HDVA.
So Al, have you made the comparison between single-ended vs balance for the HD800? Thanks

Pm me please I will do it some time tomorrow. . I have been busy and not at, my office .
Also do not be afraid to use the EQ a little you can increase the bass a little and cut the treble a little.
