Fostex or Solo - Page 2

From the technical persepctive that Fostex H1-P1 has 32 bit DAC which is better than CLAS Solo which has 24 bit DAC? Any comment?

 

So far has anyone compared the sound performance of  DAC portion of Fostex vs CLAS solo when using a similar amp such as Alo's Rx-MK3-B or RSA's SR-71B?

I love optical connection of the HP-P1, but to be honest, coaxial cables are so much cheaper to buy, or you can make them yourself, so I really really dig the CLAS digital output.

Okay, I have been back and forth between various blogs, sites, and forums about with unit to purchase. I wish choices were a lot easier.
I have the ALO audio " The National" amp and Beyer DT1350(blue dragon).

- Should I get the CLAS to add to what I already have or get the Fostex and retire the ALO amp.
Looking for the better of the two.

I'm in the military and I don't want to regret my purchase because theres probably no opportunity to return either no time soon.

I have not had a chance to play with the CLAS, but I am enjoying the HP-P1 in flight right now. I have over a million air miles over 25+ years and this is the best in flight can session I have ever had! (A little Joe Bonomasso happening now ) Since Jude found the DAC performace of the HP-P1 and the CLAS as very similar, I would look at the HP-P1. You would have a choice of 2 amps to play with and when you want to go small the HP-P1 can do both. They are close in cost and battery life.

I think you are going to be a happy camper regardless!

It play well with my se535 & westone 3 before,

even aux in Pioneer p99 in my car also play sound perfect! XD

Whichever way you go I think you will be happy.

 

Some have described the Clas as more analytical and the Fostex as warmer.

I have the Fostex and have tried the CLAS several times.

 

Fostex all in one, CLAS needs an amp(which you have)

 

Fostex comes with a nice small cable, CLAS comes with a too long a USB LOD cable i think(you`d have to buy more nicer small fit ALO cables). 

*I did get a custom LOD for my Fostex though, see my profile and pics.

 

Fostex trickle charges ipod, I dont think CLAS does.

 

Fostex simple usb charge(I plug it into an iphone wall charger), Clas needs an AC charger.

 

Many Fostex users seem to like the Fostex hp_p1. /DT1350 combo.

 

You can still pair the Fostex with the National amp, and see which inner amp you prefer.

 

Some say it takes around 200 hours for the Fostex to `open up`, I dont know about the CLAS.

 

*Just thinking out loud, seems like I am favorite the Fostex,  though not intentionally.

Thanks for all the replies thus far and they have helped me tremendously. I decided to go with the Fostex unit.
Today the UPS man dropped off the hp-p1 and the Breyer DT 1350 which I had re-cabled with moon audio blue dragon split mod.

So far I've listen and compared it to my old setup (iPod/national amp) and At first I was disappointed with the performance over the old setup. I guess I was expecting leaps and bounds, but only received small hops. As I continued to listen, I switched back and forth playing Rick Ross/some dubstep/and Sam Cooke and then I started to hear the difference the fostex unit made over the iPod and national amp. Seemed the more I listened, the more unit began to open up.
The supplied fostex LOD cable is very loose at the iPod side compared to the ALO Cricket. Any suggestions on small quality LOD cables?
There's something rattling or loose in the HP-p1.
I love the 3 gain switches but I don't understand the filter switches..???

Overall I'm happy with my new setup, just have to get used to it.

My Fostex cable died eventually. I dot a 7cm one from CableJive. It seems to hold up pretty well. (Fostex doesn't use the Line Out, so USB cable is probably a better description).
