NFB10 is excellent. Just make sure that

1.  Line input is not of interest  to you

2. You are ok with a very neutral (to brightish for some, when balanced) sound from HE500

Does anyone here notice a big difference between leather and velour in the sound? There is a huge change in sound in the HE400 which is why everyone recommend velour pads for them, but is there a big difference in the HE500?

Yes.

With velour: more clear sound, more treble, less bass. Significant for me. I suppose big for others.

Check my OP post. IMO the difference is minute if any. I prefur the Leather for comfort but the velour didn't sound any different to my ears.

I heard a bit of a difference but not much. I find the leathers much more comfortable.

I heard a big difference, the leather(ish) pads seemed to have more bass but at a poorer quality. The velour seemed to bring everything back into balance. I keep the leather around in case something happens to my velour pads and I'll force myself to listen through them until I order a new pair of velour pads.

Now that I think of it I should just order a pair now and save myself the grief.

New HE-500 owner here.  These are a very sensitive headphone I didn't expect them to be this easy to drive.  Only at 9:30 on the B22.

Have you tried them unamped? They still sound very nice, though that sensitivity kind of goes out the window.

I had the chance to use Whitecrow's HE-500's, and a pair of HE-400's he was borrowing, and they both sounded great out of my phone, but I had to crank the volume to 100%. Kind of weird since my Little Dot I+ only needed to be at like 20% for the same volume.

NO amped only.

What pads do you guys like with them?

I'm using the leathers as I find the velours to be uncomfortable. If someone knows of another pad not from HE that fits these I'd definitely be interested in getting them.

Also, I got my Norse Norn 2 cable the other day. I haven't had a chance to truly audition it for any sound changes (though I don't think I'm discerning enough to tell the difference there) but I can say it's miles away an improvement over the stock cable in terms of flexibility and comfort. The stock cable, quite frankly, sucks in terms of ergonomics. It's very inflexible and if it hits anything you hear it clearly. Don't get that with the Norn 2. If anyone is looking for a replacement cable I highly recommend it.

Velour pads, lets my ears breath a little more. Waiting on my lawton audio pads before giving leather another try.

I second that.  The Norn 2 cables are very impressive.  I also like the skuld cables as well.  Trevor is a great guy to deal with.  I'm getting Norse cables on most of my headphones.

+1 on the Norse cables as well. I got mine with the mini xlr adapter system in case I go with a balanced rig but a huge plus to this was I recently moved and my setup changed and I needed a longer cable to reach my comfy chair, with the adapter it was simple to add another 6 feet and Trevor even gave me 15% off as a repeat customer.

Beautiful cable.

Velour pads all the way my friend, I've tried the pleathers a few times now and they don't belong on these brilliant headphones! They turn them into an M50 biggrin.gif
